Bedtime woes

Hi--

We've been having trouble getting our 4 month old son to bed at a "decent hour". The bedtime has gone from 7/7:30 pm to 8/8:30 pm to 9/9:30 pm in the last three weeks. I think what we've been doing is trying to avoid a battle and waiting for really clear sleepy signs. We get them, but later and later, and indeed, if we wait, we avoid as much of a battle.

He doesn't give us much of a problem going down for naps, and he takes good naps-- three totalling 4 1/2 to 5 hours. The last one ends by around 5 pm. He's still on a 3-hour EASY schedule, but it's a loose schedule.

We have recently been on vacation, and we've been wondering if this is just a readjustment period after that... could be, but since we've been home, the bedtime has just gotten later. He's also not accepting the bundle or the binkie as readily as before. It may just be time to transition him out of these?

We're sort of lost here and have just been ending up taking him out of bed for a little while longer before trying again because the PU/PD and shush-pat just wear us down after awhile.

Thanks--

Lauren

Thanks for asking. We've got the bedtime thing back to a more normal time. We just decided to pick a "medium" time-- 8 pm-- and stick with that for a while and made the rule that when we went down, he would stay "going down" until he fell asleep, even if it took a really long time. The first two or three nights, it took anywhere from an hour and a half to just half an hour. Now we have been able to move it up a bit more, but it varies based on when he woke up from his last nap.

So things are better in as far as bedtime around here. We're still working on night wakings and considering whether to wean him from the binkie or work on training him to retrieve it on his own.
