15 months old, suddenly having sleep trouble - help!
« on: August 28, 2005, 11:04:26 am »
All of a sudden, Toby has become very fretful when we put him down at night. Since the age of 10 weeks, he's gone to bed perfectly and generally slept right through. (We follow the EASY routine) However, the last 3 nights he has cried when we put him down. I've managed to get him to sleep in the cot by staying next to him, doing the BW patting & shh thing, but this can take quite a while, and he's started waking around midnight too. When he wakes up, it's as though he just wants to be with us, but we can't have him in bed with us, as neither of us can sleep! He's also awake for quite a while during the middle of the night, which surprises me as a) he's always slept right through, unless he's been poorly, and b) he's only having one nap during the day, so he's actually really tired when we put him down (7pmish). We bring him in with us at the weekends in the mornings, but that's just for a doze.
I thought separation anxiety started much earlier than this, and I'm not convinced that this really is separation anxiety as I can leave him playing by himself during the day for half an hour!
I'm racking my brains to think of anything that might have triggered this, but nothing has changed.
Does anyone have any suggestions or advice for two very tired parents!!?
Thanks

I'm moving this to the toddler sleep board so that you can chat with parents of kids at a similar age

I'm in the exact same situation (see my post on Night Wakings) and also squeezing my brain to figure things out.

I went back to the office a month ago and ds didn't seem disturbed at all (he stays at home with his nanny and my grandparents). He is such a happy camper all day long. He takes great naps. But as soon as he sees me (for the last couple of days) he gets clingy and whiney so my guess is separation anxiety.

I'm no help here, I don't know what to do because nothing seems to work. He just wakes hysterical and cries and cries. I tried PU/PD and he cried with no decrease in his volume, for 1.5 continued hour. So I quit. He was about to throw up.

Please, if you figure something out or come up with advice /solutions, let me know. We're in the same boat

We had this problem with Emily. That's when I found this site.We now do pu/pd laying her down leaving the room, count to 10,go in lay her down, keep doing this until she goes to sleep. It does take a while but after a couple of weeks it ony takes about 3 mins to get to sleep, maybe a bit longer if she wakes during the night, very rare now.
I would definetely try this.If it worked on dd then it has to work on anyone
Also I used to get really stressed when doing the counting outside of her room but now I do stretching and arm exercises while counting to ten.Even pelvic floor and butt squeezes are working wonders
