Breastmilk tastes different after frozen. It tastes bitter!
« on: August 30, 2005, 02:35:36 am »
Hi,

My son is 7 months old and for the last 2 weeks I've been having a very hard time getting him to drink his milk. He usually drinks from 20-25 oz. plus 3 solid meals. I have a lot of frozen milk and just thaw it out the night before and give it to him the next day. However for the last 2 weeks it has been harder, so I smelled and tasted the milk and it was terrible (I know it's not bad since he doesn't complain or have diarreah). I thought milk was supposed to be sweet. So this is the first time I've tasted it and maybe it's a bad batch (Maybe I ate too much garlic that day?). So I called the ped and she says she's heard about this from other moms and that sometimes milk will change its taste after being frozen, she told me to give him fresh milk and see if he likes that instead. The problem is that I'm practillay dried out, so I can't do that. Should I add some vanilla or rice cereal? I don't know what to do. I have about a 3 month supply of milk. I just dried out 2 weeks ago.

Yes, thawed milk has different taste than fresh. If your lo is able to drink it, give it to him by all means.

I have no real suggestions except to echo Monika - if he'll take it, give it to him. I don't know if it's a good idea to add things to it though.  Vanilla extract has alcohol in it, so I wouldn't recommend that. It might just take him a while to get used to it.

Thanks,

I had no idea breast milk tasted different when frozen, I was able to give it to him when he was younger and never had any problems. If I knew this I wouldn't of frozen it and tried to give it to him fresh. What is the maximum amount of time breast milk can be frozen?

My BM did taste much different when frozen.  My son would NOT drink it if it were frozen/thawed...  If your LO will drink it let them drink it.  It is not bad...  however what I did with my DD is I put the bags in freezer bags then in a second freezer abg to keep out the freezer burn, and also keep it away from the cold air blast (the fan) in the freezer.

But does it retain the same nutrients or does that change too? I freeze my milk in Ziploc antifreeze bags and my freezer is always on 0 degrees. My breastmilk doesn't have any freezer burn.

It retains it's nutrients.  You can store it in a chest freezer for about 6 months, a separate freezer section of a fridge (with its own door) for about 3 months - and much less if the freezer shares a door with the fridge.  It's still good for him, don't worry!  :D

Hi,

These past 2 days he just refuses to drink it, it's such a struggle. I don't know what to do. What can I add to make it taste better? Has anybody else gone thru the same thing? This makes me so sad.

Also I add it to his food and he can tell!

Have you introduced any fruits yet? You might offer him a smoothie with your EBM and some fruit in it that he has already tried and was OK with. Just an idea...

So I had the courage to try the breastmilk again and it was disgusting, it tastes bitter. Any recommendations for infants formula that tastes good?
