How am I supposed to put my 8 wk old to sleep using the pat/shush method with my 2 year old making noise and interrupting us?

sell the 2 year old.   :D

does your 2 year old still nap in the afternoons?  if so, i would spend the most time trying to teach your 8-week old during that time.

as for when your toddler is awake....
- do a massive babyproofing in the part of your house where your toddler will be while you are with baby & corral them in there
- have some toys that only come out when you are trying to teach the little one to sleep.
- try & get some good interaction playtime in right before the baby will wake up (if you can manage to stay awake yourself!)
- you may want to give your lo a doll of their own to do pat/shhh on.  my dd almost does it better than i do now!!!
- install a gate along the hallway where your toddler can watch you from, but can't disturb the baby (even if the toddler screams)
- dvds can be fantastic

Thanks,  but I would probably have to pay someone if they're familiar with two year olds!!! :D

Very helpful hints...I just tried that just a minute ago, she's going down for a nap and my son started crying, so I told her I think I heard her baby crying, and she started patting her.  Thanks so much!

Just thought Id let you know that Im in that same boat.  My 2 and a half year old always seems to disturb the sh-pat - it drives me mad but I also feel guilty for leaving her to entertain herself while i do it.
Its so hard isnt it.  I agree with the above, a dvd is a good idea or bribery!
I use sweets.  tut tut tut.
If she stays downstairs and plays while im doing it then she gets a little reward for being good and not shouting up the stairs.  At the moment its ok because the baby doesnt sleep much, If she was sleeping regularly Id have to re think it!
Good luck.   Its hard work isnt it!!

I usually let my older son watch a DVD for nap #1
Nap #2 is during his nap
and nap #3 is at a time when Daddy is home.

White noise is very important.
If you don't want to get a white noise machine, try a cd or putting your radio on static. A dehumidifier works well also.
