OMG OMG, I just figured it out.
« on: August 31, 2005, 16:39:05 pm »
I am determined to figure out my poor DSs sleep issues and I know now what might be at the core of his night waking.  Apart from the fact that I have to move to a 4 hour feeding schedule...i was STILL cluster feeding him at night!  Since I didn't put him down until 9:30 or 10:00 I would feed him at 5,7, and 9 or something like that.  I didn't know you were supposed to stop the cluster feeding at like 6 or 8 or however many weeks.

He was still awake that late because he was likely chronically overtired and overstimulated and not able to relax!!!!!  I can do this, I know I can:)

EUREKA   :P  8)

Hee hee....dont' you just love those epiphanies?  And it's always the most obvious things that we still don't see because of our sleep deprived state.

Really, though, I quit cluster feeding much later than 8 weeks because it just worked for us.  When it quit workign, I quit doing it.

I hope you continue to get things figured out! :D

Hi,

I am still cluster feeding and have no intention of stopping anytime soon.

My little guy sleeps through almost 100% of the time too!

I typically feed him at 5, 630, and then last bottle about 730pm
He will then sleep from 800 until 4-630am.....

Maybe it is worth a try.......why are you not supposed to cluster feed after 8 weeks??

Hey Marylou, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!  I clusterfed for a lot longer and it worked just fine for us.  I'm not sure why Tracy suggests clusterfeeding only to 8 weeks, but if you are fine with cluster feeding longer and it works for you, keep doing it!  I think Stephen was several months old before I quit....I think it was around the time he started solids, but maybe a little later than that even.

the only thing I can think of as to why she suggests stopping the cluster feed is because the goal is to get the lo's to go a 4 hour stretch without a feed.  Also, by not cluster feeding, it will hopefully get them to take more at the dream feed (that is assuming you are dream feeding?).  I am def. no expert, but that is what I think.
lots of moms have told me that they cluster feed for a lot longer than 8 weeks.  Me being the type that likes to go by the book, I stopped around 12 weeks when I read that in Tracy's new book, and it has worked out fine for us (she still made it through the night and did start eating more at the df).  so do whatever works out good for you and your lo!
