using pacifier as tool to extend naps
« on: August 31, 2005, 18:44:00 pm »
Hi,

DS is almost 5 months.  Last thursday i ditched the paci and DS doesn't seem to have missed it.  Obviously it was more a prop for me than him.
I had plugged him up so much i didn't know his hunger, fussy, tired cues.

Anyhow, I am on the road to recovering my self esteem as a mom learn his cues.  He can only stay up about 1.25-1.5 hours right now and I'm hoping on using the techniques shown in the post "Tracy helped Josie get past 45 min. naps"

My question is, do you think I should use a paci if it will help him settle in for naps...or at the very least to extend his naps?  I would take it out once he's asleep and hopefully it wouldn't become a prop...or would it?
I really don't want him to grow dependant on it.

(he's still not finding his hands regularly-especially when all worked up)

Thanks

Traci

With Abigail, I use a paci just to settle her down before naptime.
I bring her to her room, sit with her and put the paci in her mouth, and put her down when she is calm but still awake. I put her down with the paci but she usually spits it out and finds her thumb.
As far as extending naps, I have NEVER had any success with using the paci to extend naps.
Also, Abigail never wants her paci any other time, just to calm down before naptime and bedtime.
HTH

DS is napping/going down wonderfully now.  I can see him suck his tongue to soothe himself.  Of course, that was the cause of a bad latch for days 1-3...and I thought it was a curse, and now it is a blessing!
