all of a sudden refusing to eat
« on: September 01, 2005, 14:12:59 pm »
My baby is nearly 6 months old and has been eating solids for about  a month.   The last two meal times she has refused to eat.  She just gets upset and won't open her mouth and pushes, what little I manage to get into her mouth, out.  She used to love to eat solids.  She would eat a whole 2.5 oz container if I let her.  I don't know what to do.  She doesn't have any teeth.  Any ideas?

At about 6 months Abigail did the EXACT same thing. I worried because she had been taking 30 oz and eating solids twice a day, she went down to eating 15 oz and barely any solids for about 2-3 days. I was so worried she was going to want to wake up at night and eat since she was eating so poorly during the day but she never did and it resolved on it's own after about 3-4 days. I don't know if it is something they just "go through" at this age?

I think this is pretty normal.  Just keep offering them to her like you were doing before.  She'll eventually come around again.  My ds did the same thing. HTH

Thanks for the encouragement.  I will just keep trying.  Its nice to know that I am not the only one who has gone through this.

Thanks again

It's totally normal, don't worry! Babies' appetites vary quite a bit, and she may just not be hungry. Also, they go through lots of phases as they discover their tastes and preferences, so it's not uncommon to only eat one food for awhile (like pears) or to temporarily refuse to eat. Keep offering, and if she isn't interested, try again at the next meal. Don't force the issue or get frustrated...she'll come around!

Another thought... she could be teething?

Ds did the same thing about a week ago (just turned 6 months.. so maybe it is developmental?), and I just kept offering the foods. On Sunday we discovered a bit of a tooth popping through, and on Tuesday he began eating normally again.

There is hope!  :D
