help extending naps, please!
« on: September 01, 2005, 17:48:21 pm »
My daughter Maggie (6 mos) has been on a four hour EASY for several weeks now, but we just started the PUPD about a week and a half ago (I was rocking her to sleep). She's doing great going to sleep at this point--I swaddle her, lay her down, tell her it's time for a nap (or bed). Then I just keep my hand on her while she plays/talks for about 10-15 min, then quietly drifts off. My problem is the 45 min nap syndrome! I sneak in at 25 min, put a hand on her and shush when she gets restless, and she generally stays asleep (I stay there until 45 min). Then I sneak back in at about an hour 5 min, and do the same, which works a little less often than the first time. After that, I haven't found a pattern for the next time to sneak in, so when she stirs the next time, she almost always wakes (sometimes I can sneak in). She does the same thing as when I first laid her down, plays for 10 min, but then won't go back to sleep--she starts crying, I do PUPD until the end of nap time (she really works herself up and has never gone back to sleep this way). This doesn't seem right to me, since it always ends by my saying, naptime's over! Has anyone else experienced this, or have any ideas for me? Thank you!!

How long are you trying to get her to nap for? 45 minutes x 3? When I am struggling with 45 minute naps with Molly (she is just transitioning to the 4 hour EASY) I do the same as you...go in at 30 minutes and help her over the 45 minute jolt. Then she sleeps another 45 minutes and if she wakes up I figure she slept 1.5 hours and let her get up.
Occasionally she will sleep another hour or hour and a half.
I don't go in a second time (at the second 45 minutes), but if you wanted to I guess you would just time it the same as the first 45 minutes. For example, if she goes down at 9 am, go in at 9:30 am, then again at 10:15 I think??
Let us know how it's working out for you, extending two times that is.
