Anyone else with a very "efficent" eater?
« on: September 02, 2005, 12:51:40 pm »
I think I have a very "efficent" little eater on my hands!  DS only takes about 5-7 min average per feeding (10min max).
I'm not concerned about him gettnig enough because he was born at 7lbs and now weighs over 12.5 (9wks old).

I know Tracy says in her book that it usually takes more like 25+ min to get a good feeding in.
Should I be stretching his feeds longer than 3 hrs so he takes in more?
Also, this means his "A" time is obviously much longer-- so he usually gets tired quicker, but his naps aren't usually any longer.  What should I do with him when he wakes?

My lo is also an efficient eater, I was concerened at first about how much she should east, but I figured she wasn't fussing and was also putting on weight. She was also going 3.5 or more hrs between feeds.
Must dash, kids running loose.

My lo was also very efficent and still is.  I kept her on 3hr routine til 4mos.  For activity time I just kept her activities pretty low key, like staying in bed for another 20mins after feeding and just having some snuggles time. :D

Natalie lost almost none of her birthweight and gained a good bit in the first two weeks at only 10 minutes per feed. I couldn't figure out how she did it but hey, I took it!!! After Josie took more like 45 minutes as a baby till her 3-month growth spurt (which cut it back to 15 minutes ), I was happy to have some time to let "the girls" air off! LOL

Same here, Red is 10 weeks and has been feeding for 10 mins or less since he was about 5/6 week old. A blessing with a second baby!

I was fascinated to read all the other mothers messages about fast feeders. I used to worry that my 4 month old baby boy was only getting the fore-milk because he was asking for the other side after less than 5 mins. I panicked and started topping him up with a few ounces of formula at each feed. His weight gain was fine and in fact all the extra formula did was over fill him and mean that I was constantly covered in baby sick!
He has begun down the route of baby rice and eats brilliantly off a spoon-- he's just a great feeder. His older brother was always a problem to feed ( and still is at 4 years!) so I was fully expecting the same this time around-- luckily they are complete opposites. i can see myself in the future telling Thomas to leave James' food alone to give him a chance to eat it.

I worried once, but when ds#1 (born 4.64kg/10lb4) weighed 6kg at 5wo (now 8kg at 3mo) I knew that he could get plenty in 5-6, 5min feeds every 24 hours. such a change from my 1 hour feeder in ds#1, who also ended up a big boy, but with him I thought I over fed him as he took so long & got so fat... now decided I just have fat building milk

It was good to read this thread. My first DD definitely took at least 20-30 min and 45-1hr when she was newborn.  Madelen is sometimes done in 5min! 10 max! I was worried she wasn't getting enough but she's gaining weight like crazy and is completely satisfied. I guess I'll stop worrying!

Good!  I guess this is pretty normal!
A few questions--
Do you then stop and burp your DC after a few minutes?  Or just do one burp at the end?
Also, it seems like DS awake time is much longer and he gets tired quicker-- anyone else experience this?
