I am due with baby 2 in a week and I know my 3 year old will be full of amazed questions when I start bf - has anyone been through this and how did you explain what you were doing and that this was for the baby only.  My little einstein is quite the force to be reckoned with when it comes to chalking up questions to befuddle her Mom. :D

Honestly...we watched "That's my baby" on animal planet...a show that shows animals having babies, and then nursing.  I said "look, that baby is drinking his mama's milk, that's how babies eat and get big and strong.  Our new baby is going to drink mama's milk also (and then went on about how I fed him mama's milk and look how big and healthy he is now etc....)
I figure let mother nature teach the lesson...

Both my sister and my SIL used a doll baby (or stuffed bear!) to give to the toddler, in preparation for the new arrival.  They explained about how the milk is to feed baby and the toddlers frequently would "nurse" their dolls at the same time.  If the older child was interested in nursing, they explained that they were big girls and drank out of big girl cups... that sort of thing.

All we had to tell both my kids now and to Zachary when I had Kalla, was that mommy was feeding baby with 'mommy's milk' and so far that has satisfied them.  Course when they feed there babies, they are masters at bf too.  Pull their shirt up and everything.  They can both bf standing, watching tv and walking.........lol....they are even better than me!  hehe

With Josie I was very matter-of-fact. Breasts make milk for babies, and they're just body parts like hands and feet and noses and stuff, except that only women have them, not men. She also bf's her "buddies" when they need it and is quite proficient too! :) Also we had some books to explain about new babies to her so she'd have an idea what to expect and they addressed nursing and bottles there too, plus shes got some baby animal books that have baby mammals nursing, so she's even figured out that we're mammals!

We've used the phrase "Mommy's milk" too.  I think it makes sense to them.  Actually now when Noel does cry (pretty rarely) Madeline says- "Baby crying- Mommy milk."  It's very cute.
She has asked a few times- but I don't make it a big deal- as said before I tell her she did that when she was a baby.  Now she can have milk in a big girl cup,etc...   And I emphasize how great it is that she's a big girl- she can walk and talk- and eat icecream (or something else that a baby can't.)
Best wishes!!!
