feeding schedule...???
« on: September 08, 2005, 15:38:30 pm »
I have just started cereals (completed rice and barley now onto oatmeal) and will be starting vegetables next. I was wondering if anyone kept a schedule that they were willing to share with me as to when they offered foods along with when they breastfed/bottle fed. Is it better to alternate or bf first then solids?

If you want advice on feeding schedule let me know, I am on my third month of solids and it has worked brilliantly, I have it all on my laptop so I can e-mail it to you; I have to say though I did not do the baby cereals like you, I went straight in with fruit and veg after the first three days of baby cereal. Gigi is a great eater now and had ( touch wood) not refused anything so far inc. broccoli.

Hey, I have a feeding schedule on my desktop if you would like me to e-mail it to you. I am in my third month of weaning and it is going great; Gigi is eating everything inc spinach ( touch wood). I have to admit though that I started on the fruit and veg straight after three days of baby cereal. Let me know if you would like it.

Hello from England!  :D

My DS is 5 and a half months and I am just tentatively taking steps along the the path to getting him on to solids.  He seems to really be enjoying it so far but I would be really grateful if you could possibly send me a copy of your schedule as I don't have the first idea of when to give him milk and when to give him food.  I want to make sure that he is getting enough milk but he doesn't seem to be interested in the milk once he sees that there is 'real' food on offer.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated. At the moment he is on a four hour schedule with bottles at 7 am, 11 am, 3 pm, 6.30 pm and dream feed at 10.30 pm and I am giving him a jar of food with his 3 pm bottle.

My email address is as follows: elainemarieclark_1@hotmail.co.uk

I have just started my DS on some solids as milk is just NOT enough for my BIG boy. I have been told by doc's and have read that you should give the bottle or breast just like nornal then offer solids after till they don't want anymore. I feed at 7, 11, 3, 7 and DF at 10 (that I am starting to eliminate). At the 7AM feed he has his bottle and some rice cereal. At 11 he has bottle and some veggies. At 3 he has bottle and some fruits. All the food that I give him is for a 4 mo old and I give him 2 table spoons. Most of the time he takes it all and LOVES it. Just follow your instinct and let your baby guide you. There really is no wrong way to feed your baby.

Hi Brynn'sMum  :D

I started with rice cereal at breakfast after milk for a few days (and offered breast afterward cereal as well). Then I started to increase the amount as she would eat it all and look for more! Then I added a bit of banana to it (put it in the microwave to soften it first). I have added different fruits to it over the weeks and increased the amount/thickness gradually.

The next feed is just milk (11ish). Then the next feed is milk first then veggies, then more milk. I started with avocado (which is a great one I think) about 3 weeks after starting breakfast. Again starting with a small amount and giving the same thing for a few days and gradually increasing the amount, then trying different things for a few days at a time.

I actually gave a little oatmeal after the 11 am feed today to try it out and it went down well! I will give that for a good 4/5 days on its own and then I think I will swap to oatmeal and fruit for breakky + milk, fruit or veggies for lunch + milk (even though it is at 11 am!) and then veggies with rice/pasta + milk for dinner.

In a few weeks I will try adding a bit of chicken at lunch or dinner time and see how that goes.

Good luck with it! I know it can be a bit mind boggling - it was for me!

Hi Ladies

Thanks so much for the helpful advice.  In the last couple of days I have started to give DS his bottle first then offer him some food about 30 mins to an hour afterwards which seems to work well for us but I seem to be spending all day feeding him one way or another! He is now having solids after his 7.00 am breakfast bottle as well as 3.00 pm dinner bottle. I think I will try giving him some lunch next week.

It might sound strange, but his appetite seems to have increased! Some times I get the feeling that he would like some more food but I don't want to over feed him as he is having a good 7 oz of milk before each meal.  Should I just keep offering him food until he turns his head away, clamps mouth shut etc or should I stick to the recommened amounts of 1-2 tlbs?

I can't believe how complicated this all is! I know that the EASY routine has had a fantasticaly postive effect on my life but being a 'text book' Mum I am really thrown by not having step by step instructions to follow so this forum is invaluable to me!!!

Thanks again

 :)
Best Wishes

feeding schedule...???

Just sharing my thoughts.  My ds is 3 1/2 mos old and because he is STARVING  (well, at least acting like it) the pedi gave us the green light to start cereal.  They recommended that I give the cereal FIRST and then follow with the bottle.  Well, ds is so mad when he wakes up, that I have to give him a little bit of his bottle so that he'll calm down and then I can give him the cereal.

My question is this....do I give cereal every 4 hours?  He usually eats at 6 am, 10 am, 2pm , 6pm and then a df at 10.  He goes to day care, so I am just a little selfish in wanting to feed him his cereal at 6, but I don't know if he should have it again at 10 and 2 or just one of those.  HELP?!
God will give you exactly what you ask Him for, even if it's not in the package you expected it to be in.

Hello amystoker,

I ain't NO doc but this is what I did when I started DS on solids. First thing when he wakes (7am) - bottle, then offer cereal. Then next feed (11am) bottle - then cereal or veggies (dep on age). Next feed (3PM) bottle - then cereal or fruit (dep on age). This so they get the milk that they need more than the cereal. At 3 to 4 months they should be getting more milk than other. Your LO will let you know when they are full, remember that their tummy's can only hold so much and every baby is different. I usually give the bottle then about 1 hour later offer the solids. That is just me though and it seems to keep him happy, so much so that I have droped the df and he sleeps from 8ish till 7ish. Its great!!!

Happy trails!!!

Hi there,

Well I have been on solids with my DD since she was 3.5 months, she is a great eater, and a very healthy baby. To tell you the truth I wasn't following to the line what the books says.

I did started on cereal but on oat instead of rice I would also add some breast milk to the cereal the first few days as well as to the veggies and fruits. We stared with the veggies since I had few friends that started with fruits and had pb with veggies after.

In the Baby Whisperer Solves all your Pb. Tracy gives us a chart on page 136-137 about "From feeding to eating: The adventure continues." Depending on your babys age and when she has started to eat you have a different suggested schedule. My DD is 6 mths and a week old but she is on a similar schedule that a 9 mth is since she started to eat very soon.

By 9mths most babies are eating solids at brekfast (approx 9am), lunch (12pm-1pm ), and dinner (5-6 pm).
Breast or bottle first thing in the morning between feeds (as snack) and before bed.

This is her schedule.

Wake up 7:00 AM

E 7:00 AM BF (snack) / 8:00 AM Solids
A up to 9:00 AM
S 9:00 AM ( 1.5h -2h)

E 11:00 AM BF (snack) / 12:00 PM solids
A to 1:00 PM
S 1:00 PM ( 1.5h -2h)

E 3:00 PM BF (snack) / 5:00 PM-5:30 PM Solids
A 6:00 PM
S 6:00 PM cat nap 30 min approx

E 7:00 Pm BF
A to 7:45 PM including bath and sleep routine.
S 7:45 PM gone to dreemland.

Dreem feed at 11:00 PM

Some times wake up between 4:00 AM and 5:00 am to feed. And I am ok with that. Also this is a routine that we try to stick to but I don't walk with a clock in my hand, as long as she nows what's next we are great.

Maby this can help someone, it works for me exept when she was teething or after vaccination, then the sleeping was a mess but food wasn't a pb :D

Good luck

hello from the uk

Ive just started my four month old on a new feeding schedule as i was finding he was too full to have bottle and solids together. He wakes at 7 has bottle(6oz),then small amount of cereal at 8,bottle again at 11 and 3 then veggies at 4.30 and last bottle at 7. I got the schedule of here and its worked wonders and hes napping for longer as well!
