New wind down worked magic for my DS
« Reply #15 on: September 12, 2005, 10:05:20 am »
Oh Jane, you know when to say the right things. My DS who's been a great napper of late, suddenly reverted to 40m naps yesterday and today. Although he also did 2 hours thismorning. I was worried something had gone haywire. Hopefully it was just a bad couple of days. I'm trying to extend his awake time to around 2 hours so wondered if that had something to do with it too?

I think I need more quiet time before bed time than I'm giving him now. Like Traci found happened, what works one day, doesn't the next. I get that frequently

Little Bear's mum.

what kind of activity are you doing between catnap and bedtime?  I'm at a complete loss.  It is taking DS an hour to settle regardless of Awake time.  I do let him play on the floor, but it's mostly bathing, feeding, carrying (my arms or carrier), walks around the neighbourhood.  He seems so lively that one day i made the mistake of popping him in his exersaucer thinking he needed to burn off some energy    I think maybe he was just tired already and needed calm and quiet.  Any ideas you have would be great.

Cole did sleep until 4:10 yesterday (woo hoo).  He stayed up until 5:30 but then i had to WAKE him at 7:45!!!  so things are progressing.  I just really want to get him down in less than one hour so i can enjoy the evening.

Traci, we keep popping up on the same forums!

My activity is usually something like this.
DS wakes up, cuddles, maybe a story, feed if it's time for one (this only takes 15 mins max), if not time for feed then Jolly Jumper for about 15 mins. Not sure if JJ is an international toy, but if it is and you haven't got one, you should get one! Or by one over the internet from NZ. They hang of a door frame and they're in a seated harness and they jump and jump and laugh! Anyway, after that if I haven't fed, I'll do that next. If he fed first, I'll do more upright time and leave JJ about 30 mins. DS sits up, so we'll do floor sitting up time with toys, then after a while lie down as I'm trying to get him rolling (goodness knows why? ) nappy free time. This all probably takes me up to about an hour. I may then put him in his high chair with a toy while he watches me do stuff in the kitchen. This lasts about 20 mins max. More floor time for a few mins, then within about 20 mins of bed time it's another story or 2, a couple of songs, walking around the house or outside. 5 mins before bedtime, or when there's definitely a grizzle, we go into his room singing "twinkle twinkle little star", close the curtains, cuddles while I sing for a couple of mins only, lay him in bed, wrap him up, kisses then I leave him. I have a music box which plays classical music for 15 mins. Sometimes I use this, but not always. Usually he makes a few noises, maybe a minute of gentle crying, then just moaning noises. Within 5-10 mins he's quiet/asleep.

Sorry it's a little long, but I thought I'd give you a typical run down. In saying that, with friends across the road with a couple of lo's we often go over there for about an hour of awake time, but I'm home for the last 15-20 mins awake time. We also go out for a walk to the mailbox with ds in his buggy/pushchair. This is about 10 mins slow walk.

Afternoon awake time which can potentially last 4 hours is like this to begin with, then we usually add in a walk, baby mozart video, lots more cuddles, more floor time and JJ a couple of times. I do try to keep the activities more low key as time ticks by. Then 45 mins before bed is bath time which he loves, apart from the dressing bit, cuddles while reading 1 story, b/feed in his room, low light, then bed. He goes down awake, but only just. His bed time is currently 7pm which is working really well.

There you go, our typical day. I've also learnt if we need to go to town 30 mins drive away, to do it after his early afternoon nap if possible. That way he's getting at least 2 good naps hopefully in the day, and a nap in the car on the way home.

So it doesn't look much different from what you've said about your day I don't think. But maybe there's something in there for you. If you want to feel free to PM me and we can talk further. :D

inchworming
« Reply #18 on: September 16, 2005, 12:57:52 pm »
Traci,

First of all, congratulations on your breakthrough!

Now a question: You mentioned "inchworming" a couple of times in this thread. This sounds just like what my DS does at sleep time. I swaddle him and hold him on my shoulder doing pat/shh, and he fusses against me in a distinctly inchworm-like fashion. He doesn't relax and even might get more agitated until I stand up. He gets fussy again when I put him down in the crib (still patting and shhing). My qestion: Is this "inchworming" part of the normal sleep window, or is it a sign of being overtired?

Thanks
Brooke

brooke,

to be honest i'm not 100% sure.  It was mathew'smommy who pointed out the "inchworming" to me.  I think it's something they do when they try to settle...so if he's doing that I don't hold him very long at all.  I figure he's trying to sleep and i'm keeping him from it!

That's the best I can offer...anyone else have anything to add?
