1.5 hours of Awake time for several nights!
« on: September 07, 2005, 11:30:24 am »
Hi,

I am really hoping someone can help me.  My 5 month old DS wakes up for an hour and a half almost every night (Saturday he didn't-not sure why).  It has happened at times from 2:00-3:30, 3:00-4:30, last night was 1:30-3:00.  It's not hunger as he tries to settle back but just can't because he's so awake.

We've been having earlier bedtimes for 2 weeks now.  Used to put him down around 9:30 or 10:00   and he was chronically overtired for sure!  Anyway, two nights ago he went down around 7:15 and woke at 2:30, last night he went down at 6:10 (due to short catnap) and woke at 1:30!  He wasn't too loud or needy for a half hour so i left him...then it was shhhh/pat for an hour.

I was confident last night was going to be better because he went down really well for all three naps and started sleeping on his tummy yesterday which he seems to love.

after going back down at 3:00, he woke at 4:00 but settled back down right away...then up at 5:30 to feed, didn't go back down right away (I'm new to putting him down on tummy-not very graceful at it)

Anyway, if anyone has words of advice I'd be very grateful (even just words of encouragement)

thanks

Traci

Hi Traci  :D
My lo has been doing the same for the last few weeks, but she doesn't do it every night. The days she did stay awake at night seemed to be the ones when she didn't nap well and was overtired. Although, it may also be due to rolling around in the cot, which she has been doing loads of too. The advice I got, was just keep doing what your doing ie: try to settle them/ shh/pat/ or leave them to settle themselves. If she cries it's easy and I do pu/pd which gets to sleep really quickly, but mostly she doesn't cry! It's just one of those things they grow out of....hopefully quickly, as it is sooooo tiring.

I have also found tummy sleeping is better for my lo - she discovered it herself while rolling around like a maniac trying to get off to sleep.

Just hang in there, keep doing what you are doing and it will get better!  :D

you're darn right it's tiring.  glad to hear i'm not alone (not for your sake of course)

maybe i should do pupd instead of pat/shush if he'll go back to sleep faster.  how do you do pupd with a tummy sleeper?  i did a few last night when he was really upset and it seemed awkward.  do you put your lo down on her tummy, or on her back and let her roll herself?

thanks for the encouragement...i'm off to nap now :D

Hi Traci - I'm just going to echo Susana on this one...whenever Molly does 45 minute naps during the day instead of 1.5-2 hours she will wake up tons at night. She cries out, I go in and put my hand on her and she settles right back. But sometimes she does it every hour! Yesterday was a bad nap day and she was up at 2 am, 4 am then I heard her chatting away to herself for about an hour - not crying just grunting etc...and then awake at 6 am again!
I think it definitely has to do with the short daytime sleeps.
Hang in there, hopefully it'll work itself out!

Hope you had a good nap! I'm new to this tummy sleeping thing so I really don't know about how you would do pu/pd (I need to get some advice myself on how to put them down for sleeps etc. At the mo I seem to only be able to put her on her tummy when she is about to pass out. Normally I put her on her side and let her settle herself and then sometimes she just ends up on her tummy). When I did pu/pd the other night I just put her on her side as I usually do. I find pu/pd works really well with my lo, it only takes a few goes and she just zonks off. Like I said though she hardly ever cries and it's impossible to do if they don't cry. Whether it would be the best for your lo, you will have to gauge - if it settles him then go for it! If it gets him really worked up then maybe the other methods are better.

One thing I thought of yesterday, regarding over tiredness, is when Ruby has been up at night and then wakes up in the morning overtired I don't try to keep her up at all. I just feed her, cahnge her, rock her so she's really calm, wait for a sleepy cue, then straight off to bed. This morning she's only been up an hour, but she will most likely have a really good nap and catch up on some sleep, which will hopefully make her other naps better and her sleep tonight. (This worked the other day, but who knows whether it will today!)

Just noticed, Michelle, that your lo is one day younger than mine  :D

Cole slept through!

not sure if it was because of his two hour battle to go down last night...but he slept 9:20-3:50 with 11pm DF (and went right down after DF)

fed him at 3:50 and he settled down but I stayed until 4:30 just to be sure!  then slept until 6:20...tried to settle him down for 20 more min. to get up for 7 but no luck.

Anyone double diaper?  he wasn't soaked through and I didn't want to stimulate him, but i think if i changed his diaper at 4 he might have lasted longer.  Does double diapering just prevent it from leaking onto his clothes?  would it maybe keep it warmer too so as to not feel cold against his skin?  I probably should have changed him...but really really really didn't want him to wake up completely.

At least I feel rested today!

another sleepless night
« Reply #7 on: September 09, 2005, 11:50:50 am »
okay, here was my night last night.

DS went down at 6:45 without a peep.  Woke up screaming at 7:30.  Not like him at all when he goes down by himself.  Now, he hadn't had a BM since Tuesday morning and it seemed to be troubling him.  Gave him some Oval and fed him one boob ( I know I know but I really felt it was troubling him and hoped more milk would force it out)  Settled him in my arms (stopped crying when i pumped his legs!) Put him in the crib drowsy and settled in 20 minutes.

DF at 11:00 no problem settling.
woke at 2:50, no problem settling.
woke at 3:50...close enough to feed time.  fed one boob...didn't want to settle.  tried for half an hour.  he'd cry, then go quiet etc...finally at 4:45 he was quietly babbling so I left.  He did this for 15 minutes then cried again.  I tried to shhh/pat until 5:20, still more crying and even screaming.  Tried a bit more Oval.  I know the magic number is 1.5 hrs....and we'd surpassed that.  I picked him up and he instantly settled in my arms after a huge burp and a toot!  Anyway, I just knew he wouldn't settle in his crib so I crept downstairs and put him in his bouncy chair.  he has never slept in it.  NEVER.  nor his car seat unless we're in the car.  He fell fast asleep.  I am confident that I made the right decision not to shhh/pat him in the crib.  I think he needed to be elevated.  Anyhoo, he woke up at normal time (6:20) so he had slept close to an hour and we played quietly on the floor til 7 (well, he played while i lay under a comforter resting my aching back!)

Fed at 7:00 and I just cleaned up the biggest dirty diaper.

So my question is this...DS had runny baby like poops until I started this sleep training.  Is it possible that the additional rest had changed his cycle?  Is there anything I can eat to help him stay more regular.  He wasn't in agony...but if I can help it so that he goes at least every second day (it had been three days) I think he might feel better.

Thanks!
