my baby has learnt to roll over! clever girl! but she now sleeps on her tummy all the time. I have started to sh/pat to sleep to get her off on her back but within a couple a mins of leaving the room she is on her tummy. with current advice on SIDS and sleeping on their backs I am worried. She is nearly 5 months old. What do you guys think? Is there anything I ought to be doing differently? althuogh I don't mind doing sh/pat to get her off to sleep I don't want it to get so she can't drop off independtly

have you tried using bolsters? My baby just started rolling over too and I sometimes find her sleeping on her tummy; I am not too worried about it; if you are do try bolsters, a lot of my friends are using them and they are great for keeping a baby in place

The risk for SIDS significantly decreases when your lo is able to roll over :)

The risk doesn't go away until after 1 year, but part of the thinking behind SIDS is that your lo buries his/her head into the matress, and the auto mechanism in the brain that wakes you up if you're suffocating doesn't kick in. Usually if your lo can roll over and has mastered head control the risk decreases.

Mine has been sleeping on her tummy since about 3 months. I was incredibly worried at first, but now I'm not so worried. She does sometimes move her face flat down into the cot while sleeping, which does tend to freak me out sometimes, but she moves it back to the side then after about 30 seconds. As long as you don't have a lot of covers and such around for her to bury herself in, you should be ok.

If it really concerns you, I would wait until she's asleep and in deep sleep before rolling her back over. That way it doesn't eventually turn into a game.

My lo sleeps on his tummy and i was worried at first. There are loads of posts on here about it, so have a search. it seems it is just advice based on statistics rather than medical evidence. if they can roll over it reduces any risk,a nd really if they can move theri own head from one side to another the risk is greatly reduced. I wouldn't worry about it. i know the advice we are give, but everyone finds thier own comfort position and that is just your lo's.

THanks everyone! I feel reassured that my dd is not the only tummy sleeper. I'll try turning her in deep sleep again and look out for the bolsters, not seen those before.

If you can not find them, they are easily made by rolling up towels and then putting a sheet over the top of both of them to keep them in place and then putting the baby in between the bolsters on top of the sheet. MUch cheaper!!!!!!!!!
