recipe for meat and or fish balls?
« on: September 11, 2005, 22:23:24 pm »
Hi all,

Dd's doc told me not to give her any egg yolk (or white) until she's two.  She loves finger food these days and I'm looking for a recipe or recipes for fish or meatballs that don't use egg to bind them. The egg is our only real restriction but my baby food recipe books all use egg.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Sharon

The only thing I can think of is too mix them with mashed veges and rice flour  :D

For example in my book I have a Tofu and Vegetable Pattie recipe.

1 tablespoon mashe silken tofu
1 tablespoon mahed kuara
1 tablespoon mashed carrot
1 tablespoon pureed zuchini
2 teaspoons riceflour

Combine ingredients in small bowl; shape into two patties.
Heat small lightly oiled frying pa; cook patties, uncovered, about 3 mins each side or until heated through and browned lightly.

I have a Rissoles Recipe that makes about 30 mini patties

500g beef mince
1 small carrot, grated coarsely
1 small zucchini, grated coarsely
1/2 small brown onion, grated
1/2 cup stale breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon tomato sauce
2 teaspoons soy sauce
1 tablespoons olive oil

Combine all ingredients ina large bowl.  Roll level tablespoons of the mixture into balls and cook in a lightly oiled frypan.

I have great recipes for both and my kids LOVE THEM!

Meatballs especially.  The ones I make have grated carrot and spinach in them and I also put grated parmesan cheese...

They freeze well too!

Promise I will post later; I am a bit pushed for time right now, but will dig out the actual recipe and hopefully post tonight! (I have made them so many times I just "do it"; but I would like to give you actual recipe!)

One day I went to make meatloaf & found I didn't have eggs... used cheese to bind it together & it worked well & tasted great... still do it that way from time to time

Wow Sharon...until she's two?   Just curious, do you have a history of allergies?  I've always heard a recommendation of 1 year..and that's for the white?  I've already given Zoe both the yolk and the white part.  Our family doesn't have any history of food allergies so we felt pretty safe with giving it to her.  Just wondering if I'm missing something?  :D

Noelle I'm embarrased to say I don't know why yet!  Ella sees both our family doctor and a paediatrician at our children's hospital and at the last appt. for her reflux I was rattling off questions to the paed. as we were leaving. I started asking about all kinds of food (standard things) and when I got to eggs he said no, not until she's two. I said "not even yolk?" and he said no. Then we were talking about her next appt. at the hospital and tests she has to have, etc. etc. And it wasn't until we left I realized I never asked why! No, we don't have any real family allergies and I'm assuming it's got something to do with her reflux or delayed gastric emptying but... we see the paed. again in early October so I'm going to ask him why then. I'll keep you posted if you like!

Ok, whew!  It didn't have any other reasons except for what I was thinking...it is one of the foods that can cause an allergic reaction and waiting until 1 year of age greatly reduces the chances. (eek! still a bad mommy for not waiting  )

Noelle...just wanted to let you know we went back to the paed. yesterday and I asked him about eggs again. He said a year for yolk and two for white and his only concern was allergies. So... seeing as he has helped Ella become the thriving little girl she is... we're going to follow that. But I think if you've already given it, and I know what our doc said is longer than the norm, I would say you're just fine!  :D

Thanks Sharon...  :D

I forgot to tell you too...I asked my ped again at Zoe's 9 month and she said that the whites were fine at 9 months      I hadn't told her I had already given them.      But it's definitely better to err on the side of caution  :D
