She does not like the bottle...!
« on: September 12, 2005, 14:33:54 pm »
Hi... my 14 week old dd is constantly refusing her bottle. She cries out loud when I put it in her mouth and then finally when it gets in she eats desperately all her formula, then I put her up for burping and then again trying to get the bottle in is sooooo complicated but she usually drinks it all... it doesnt seem to hurt her while she drinks as she actually eats so I do not know what else to do.... someone can help please? I already read the disphagia post, but it doesnt seem like the same thing as it is happening....

Hi Daniela

What flow teats/nipples are you using? If you're still on the newborn/slow flow ones it could be that she's getting frustrated because the milk isn't coming fast enough. Try the next flow teat/nipple and see if that helps.

love

Thanks for your answer, but she is using Dr. Browns #3 nipples cause she is having the Enfamil AR that is thicker. Sheīs been using them since 2 months and the flow seems ok for her. I have tried #2 nipples and it gets worse...

Hi.  Is she a refluxer (noticed the AR formula).  My ds had/has a huge bottle aversion, and feedings have always been a struggle for us.  Have you tried skipping the burping, waiting until the end?  They often say that refluxers need to be burped freuquently, but I found the opposite to be true.  One I stopped halfway with Nathan to burp, it was a nightmare (most of the time impossible) to get him started again.  Hope things get better...

Thanks 4 the advice...  since yesterday I have been trying that cause getting again the bottle seemed impossible, it is actually working, but I always keep thinking while feeding... "please donīt throw up, please donīt do it, please, please" so mind is terrible and finally I take it out and burp her...  It is an endless circle... tell me things get better or when it will stop and can burp her at the end without having her throw up? Is your baby still throwing up at 9 mo.?

Things WILL get better!  I spent the first 5 mos taking Nathan to appts with GI specialists, taking him to the ER for dehydration, and racking my brain to figure out how to get him to take the bottle.  He grew into a silent refluxer after a few months, so he didn't vomit that much after that.  I would say that things were at there worst around 4 or 5 mos(when he was sitting more), and now things are MUCH better.  He is still on meds and still struggles with the bottle, but each day is better than the last.

1 year old is the magic age for most kids with reflux.  I know it seems like forever away, but hang in there!  Have you been able to elevate her after meals and while sleeping?  Another trick we did was to feed Nathan w/o stopping to burp, and then pop in the pacifier afterwards.  I would then just rub is back a little instead of the pat pat burp, and I would make sure his tummy wasn't pressed up against me or that he wasn't bent too much at the waist.  Then if he happened to puke, the pacifier forced most of it back down.  Yuck, I know....
