Can he have TOO much fruit?
« on: September 13, 2005, 19:30:28 pm »
DS is fruit mad and although i do try to vary things he absolutely adores Peaches!!  He has one EVERY afternoon and eats the whole thing within minutes then hands the plate back for more. (which i don't give, if he's still hungry he gets a rice cake or cracker.)

So do you think having a peach EVERY day is bad for him?  Too much acidity for his tummy or anything?

BTW, he'll have fruit 2 other times in the day (other than whats in his meals) and this will vary day to day.  He can go a day without bananas, pears, apples, raspberries etc... but MUST have a peach!!!!

Am i worrying too much?

My ds is the same way.  He would eat fruit all day if I let him.  I don't think it is a problem.  I let him have fruit at every meal.  I think maybe his stools are a little softer b/c of it, but I figure it must be good for him.  I asked the GI specialist when I last saw her and she said it wasn't a problem either.

I would kill to get ds to eat fruit!! of ANY kind!!!
He'll eat tons of veggies, simply ADORES green beans, but no fruit!

I'm no expert, but if it's not causing any tummy troubles, I say "Good for you!"

My daughter is a fruit junkie!

I don't think eating a peach every day is bad other than the potential for loose stools.  That is the one thing I hate about having a fruit lover.

We were spending and arm and a leg on raspberries, blueberries, grapes, strawberries, etc.  I finally got smart and started making her small 1/2 cup servings of assorted fruit and sticking it in the freezer.  She gets her fruit, but it being frozen slows her down.  It's less messy than those already frozen assortments too.

a peach every day is not a problem .  alex eats frut at least 3 x day and lots of veg too so we get 3 good poops per day (lucky us).  there is a problem with "too much" fruit thogh and you will know you have reached it when they get diarreah. if it gets beyond "loose" then cut back a bit - you don't want all your lo nutrients being lost in the diarreah (plus loss of hydration and potential for nappy rash)

so if no diarreah you are fine

if i am going to write diarreah 3 x you would think i would know how to spell it by now - not sure how the heck to spell it

diarrhoea. There ya go!

Anyway, I wanted to say the only thing you guys who are lucky enough to have fruit scoffers must remember is that fruit generally contains a high level of sugar (fructose). So make sure that you are remembering to brush their teeth and you'll be fine. Especially if they eat raisins or sultanas or any other stuff that sticks to the teeth.

DS loves his fruit too, but I generally give him the  stuff that's canned in it's own juices, as they are softer than fresh.  I just tried him on fresh bananna yesterday, and he ate 3/4 of a very large one  Not sure why I didn't try him on it before, except that he detested the jarred bananna, and puked when I tried him on mashed fresh.

Fortunately, ds LOVES having his teeth brushed too so we have no worries on that score.  He also drinks loads of water in the day so i guess the acid in the juice is being watered down for his little tummy.
I knew i'd be worrying over nothing!!!  Its my hobby!  :P
So just keep an eye on poops and let him enjoy what he likes i suppose!!

Thanks guys!!

Nothing more to add other than a comment about the thing Nina said about the acid in the fruit may be too much for his stomach -

No way, basically, no fruit is ever gonna be as acidic as the digestive juices in his stomach which is pH 1-2 (million times more acid than water!).

This kinda thinking stems from old wives tales.  I was fed the same stuff as a child.  I LOVE brown sauce and, esp as a child, would have it with EVERYTHING - dad would often say to me that it would "eat away the lining of my stomach" to try and scare me and left a dirty penny in it overnight to demonstrate - of course, penny would've come out shiny if it'd been left in stomach acid too

Anyway, just thought I'd mention this

My dd is the same with fruit. Loves it. Except she will NOT eat veggies. Any. Granted, I will take some blame in this. My husband and I don't either. I know.. bad examples.

Have you tried "fun" veggies?

DD loves artichoke.  It's a blast to eat.

Have you tried things you don't like?

DD loves tomatoes.  ::gag::  I can't stand the things, but she'll pop those grape tomatoes in her mouth all day long.

What about hand to mouth veggies like edamame or sugar snap peas?  I buy edamame frozen, defrost/heat in the microwave and lightly salt.  I have to tell DD to s-l-o-w down when she's eating edamame.  She eats it by the fistful.

I know that I need to try more. I just look at the veggies and get overwhelmed myself. I more just don't want her to grow up the way I did. It is embarassing really, especially when people invite you over for dinner and stuff. I don't know what endame is but I will go look for it. It is worth a shot!

Edamame are soy beans.  You can buy them shelled or whole.  I go for the shelled because they are easier, but whole may be more fun.  Corn on the cob is another fun veggie.   :)   Good luck!
