chewing food and spitting it out!!!
« on: September 14, 2005, 23:28:46 pm »
Xavier has developed this new annoying...habit, I guess.  He chews up his food and spits it out, but it's not a taste thing because he'll eat it for a while and all of a sudden do this thing.  I wonder what that's all about?  Could it be boredom?  But it happens any time during a meal (usually dinner).  Experimentation?  Do I ignore it?  Could it be teething?  He's been grabbing at his tongue and sticking his fingers in his mouth alot.  He's also spitting stuff out that has a mushy texture (mashed potatoes, risotto).  Maybe this is just a phase.  Has this happened to anyone else?

Does it mean that he is finished?  I know that when Ewan starts to play with the food it is a sign that he is getting full.  Then we just end meal time.

Tyler went through a similar phase around 16 mo or so. He'd chew something, spit it out, eat another bite, spit it out, etc. I think it was just experimentation. I ignored it and he got over it within a few days, but it could also mean he's finished eating, like Lana said.

Thanks for your replies.

I don't think he's finished, because he'll eat a bunch more after spitting stuff out, then do it again, then eat more.  I guess it's experimentation.  Why does experimentation always have to be so messy?!?!

Oh my God! I was just about to post the very same question!!

My dd has been doing this chewing & spitting up thing for the past few months. I've tried ignoring it (its been about 3mths so that doesn't work), taking away her food (just made her cry & if I let her, she would continue eating and not spit out the one of two bites after).

At first I thought it was her chewing ability but she would spit out even the mushy stuff like oatmeal, banana, etc. She was spitting out her grapes so I peeled them for her but its the same; some get eaten, some get spat out.

She also spits out her food if she's wants take a drink of water.

Does experimentation take over 3 months?!?!?!

Anyone got other ideas on how to stop it?
Cheers,

Catharine

my little boy is 10 months and for about 2 months he has been heaving when he has had enough to eat so I stop feeding him, but now he has started sticking his fingers right down his throat forcing himself to be sick! he won't stop till he's sick and if I tell him to stop he laughs at me! its as if he likes the feeling of his fingers in his throat :? has anyone else experienced this? I have rang my hv but she is on holiday, it really upsets me to see him doing this! any advice would be appreciated :)
My gorgeous little boy Ben was born on the 28th November 2004

My ds has been spitting out his food for the past week and it's not because he's finished.  Then the next minute he'll eat the same type of food he just spit out! :?   Today he spit out his banana which is his favorite food (minus the cheese sandwich!).

I don't know how to react when he does this.  In addition, he keeps throwing his sippy cup on the the floor after he takes a drink.  Meal time is crazy right now!!

Although it's comforting to know other little ones are doing the same thing!
