Night Feeds - Confused!
« on: September 15, 2005, 09:06:19 am »
Hi - need some advice as I'm confused!

Nicole is 10 weeks old and regularly sleeps through from 11pm after DF to 6.30am / 7am.   Some nights however she starts "snuffling" about 5am and sucking on her fist, obviously hungry, however she doesn't cry out.   I tend to give her a feed - more because I'm awake anyway.   I don't know whether I should just leave her and see if she resettles or continue to give her a feed.  Will this start to foster bad habits where she expects to be fed at 5am every day?

Help!
 :? Sarah

Hi Sarah. Babies tend to come out of their deep sleep cycle around 4 in the morning for some reason. This could be what is happening with your LO. Is she taking a full feed at 5 am? Or does it seem like more of a snack? Is she settling back into sleep after she eats? Is she bottle or breast fed? If breast fed, then that does seem an awfully long time between her DF and her morning feed.
IMO, if she is taking a full feed, she must be hungry. If she's just taking a snack then it's just her coming out of her sleep cycle. I'd give her a few minutes to resettle herself without your intervention. If need be, go in to her and put your hand on her. She may fall back asleep fairly quickly.
HTH!!

Thanks for the advice.  She's bottlefed  and is taking a full feed (4oz) at 5am so I guess she must be hungry.  She doesn't take more than 4-5oz in any feed so I suppose she's unlikely to go longer at night without a feed.  I'm just surprised she doesn't cry for us though - she seems quite happy when I do go to her and more often than not gives us big smiles!

Thanks!  DH is a keen photographer so has taken loads of "arty" shots like this one.  We won't be short of baby pics that's for sure!

that is great! we have just had Ethan's first proper baby pics done.  it was part of a special deal to try to sucker us in to buying more pics, i think it is gonna work.  baby pics can cost a fortune! still none of the prints is as creative as yours is.  well done to your dh!
