Started Milk Today!! HELP
« on: September 16, 2005, 02:46:15 am »
OK. My dd loves the sippy cup but with water only. She has used it since about 6 months, and she just turned 12 months. She had two normal formula bottles this morning, and then this afternoon I decided OK milk time. I got an ounce out of her the first time and then tried again at dinner and got one and half ounces out of her. tHen I finally gave her some water and she drank 4 ounces of water!! I tried again this evening and nothing. So then I tried to give her a bottle with formula and I guess she was just so mad she wouldn't take that either. I am curious to see if she will wake up tonight hungry since she technically missed 12 ounces of milk that she normally would have. Does anyone have any advice? How should I start the day off tomorrow? She makes a horrible face when she did get any milk. Didn't look pleasant. :(

Have you tried mixing the milk in with the formula... say 25%/75% then gradually over a few weeks increasing milk/ decrease formula.

No, I just went cold turkey today. Should I try that? Should I keep it in the bottle for now? I did try putting formula in a sippy cup a few weeks ago and she wouldn't take it then either.

I'd try it both ways, try to get her on the sippy, but still get the milk in by the bottle too if need be.

OK. Katet. thank you so much for your advice. I don't know why this just seems really stressful. What a serious change. Tomorrow morning I am going to try 3/4 formula and 1/4 milk in a sippy cup. Hopefully this goes better!

Since she likes water, you could also try watering down the milk. Start with 3/4 water and 1/4 milk and see if she'll go for that, then gradually add in more milk. HTH!

We tried for a few weeks to get her to drink milk after dd turned one.  She never took to it.  I left it alone since I wasn't sure if she was picking up a sensitivity to the milk (stomach ache, rumbly tummy) that she couldn't communicate to me.

We made sure she got full fat yogurt, some cheese, and other good fats as well as 1 cup of calcium fortified orange juice.  It was the only juice she drank.  J

ust recently she started taking her cereal with milk and we've stopped the juice.  That's the only milk she'll have though.  I bought her a chocolate milk on a whim yesterday and she took two sips and didn't want it.

That stinks that she still doesn't like milk. I will say though that my mom could never get me to drink it and I still won't today. But I did give my dd a little choc milk this week and oh my!! She loves it. So I don't know. I went back to the bottle this morning and gave her 4 oz formula and 2 oz of milk, and warmed it a little. she drank it all. I figure that next I am going to try the same but in a sippy cup when she wakes up.  I am also confused to whether give her the milk while eating or the same way I do the bottles.

Hi Kori,

From what i can remember with my DD, around 12mths is when she started to get choosy with her food and milk  She cut back on her milk quite alot and I used to compensate that by giving her cheese and yoghurts.

What I also did, like kate suggested was mix the formula and milk, and gradually i reduced the amount and found that she took to it ok..

I used to give her a sippy cup of milk in the mornings after her breakfast and also one before bed..

HTH

Well, I found out today that she likes the bottle more than I thought. I have done 1/3 milk and 2/3 formula. The second feeding I tried a sippy cup. NOWAY would have been her words if she could speak well. I then finally put back in a bottle and she took it all. AHHHH!! I honestly didn't think this would be this hard.

That is often a problem. Give it time & do it gradually over a month or 2

What we did was decide on one time of the day only to offer a bottle (to get the quota of milk - after lunch for us as it worked for childcare) & offer a sippy/normal cup at other times. Then when I decided to get rid of the bottle (bad mummy it was at age 2)... I made the hole bigger & watered it down. But I did that when I knew he was doing ok with calcium from other sources & I was willing to offer Strawberry milk or milk shakes & Ice cream to up the calcium, when needed

Okay... we went through a similar situation.
We were down to a bottle in the morning, and before bed.  She wouldn't drink milk from a sippy at all, just water-  loves h2o.  I did the gradual transition to milk from formula too, never actually mixed milk and formula, just did one bottle at a time.  We started offering afternoon milk in a Nuby, the sippy cups with latex spouts.  Then a few weeks later, her morning bottle in a Nuby, with a bottle back-up.  The first few days, she drank first from Nuby, then from the bottle, on about the 5th day, she just drank from the Nuby.  About a month after that, we started the bedtime bottle in the Nuby with a cheese snack.

SOOO, it took about 2 months to make a firm transition from formula to milk in a sippy.  She will now drink a few ounces of milk from a regular sippy at lunch,  and after dinner.  But for the most part, milk still comes from a Nuby.

I'd just take it slow... she'll make the transition, but it may take time.  I keep dd's milk close by and offer it frequently, but honestly, she would rather have water.

Good luck,
Trish

Trish!! that is exactly what we are going through. We are now on milk only, but only in bottles. I can't get her to take it in a sippy cup at all, but like you loves water in it. We do have two of those Nuby sippy cups you are talking about though. I might start trying it. Right now she has 4 bottles a day, so I guess I will start with the second since it is right before lunch. Thanks for the advice though!
