Sleep problems with my 9 month old?

Hi

Im writing on behalf of a friend who is having problems with her 9 month old son William.  He has recently been ill with a viral infection but previously was in a good routine, since then it seems that Will only wants to go to sleep on his mum and is really inconsistent with his naps.

As soon as he is in the cot he screams and pulls himself up as if he doesnt want to be in there, this can go on for 2 1/2 hours day or night.  At the moment Rachel is going in and laying him down, giving him his dummy and then it all repeats itself until he finally drops off with Rachel stroking his face only to wake 30 minutes later.

During the day his food intake is increasing although he isnt interested in his milk only solids.  Please can someone help us as she is at the end of her tether.

My thought is a combination of the illness & seperation anxiety... he probably actually needs her to be there for comfort.
does he got to childcare during the day?
What is his day routine like? (now & before illness)
What does she do to settle him for naps/bedtime?
Has she let him Cry it out orused Controlled drying methods
If yo can answer those questions then I can give some ideas to help, otherwise I may give ideas that don't fit with the "real problem"

Hi, thanks for replying:

Night time is now sorted out by using controlled crying, but the daytime naps are still a problem. 

He doesnt go to daycare and his routine is pretty much a 4 hour routine, of easy but the naps are very short although getting gradually longer and not so many.
