finger food question
« on: September 16, 2005, 21:33:26 pm »
Hi there-

My dd loves her new finger foods.  I even cut up pieces of avocado today and she loves them!  She gets very happy chewing and gumming things, giggles and has a great time.

The only thing is, she wants mama to feed them to her!!!! I put the pieces on her high chair and I eat some to show her and then let her try but she just opens her mouth waiting for me to feed her the pieces?  She just holds her arms out to the side and mouth gaping- while this is adorable this is not what I had in mind!!!

Does this mean she isn't ready for finger foods or self-feeding?  Ideas?

Totally normal at that age, it can take awhile for them to become interested in trying to do it themselves. Even then, you'll still be feeding her quite a bit of it while she learns. At this point, you're doing the right thing by having some pieces for her on the tray and eating some yourself so she sees how to do it. Eventually, she'll start picking up pieces on her own or grabbing them from you. I think Tyler was 8 or 9 mo before he started feeding himself...she'll try when she's ready!

Oh, and make sure she can pick up whatever you're feeding her. Sometimes slippery foods can be frustrating or feel yucky, so you can always coat them in dry baby cereal or crushed cheerios. Good luck!

Definitely normal!  My LO would not pick up finger foods, even though he loved the different tastes/textures.  It seemed it was overnight, around 8 mos for him, that he was started to feed himself.  Keep doing what you are doing!  It might also help to put food on her tray and walk a few steps away.  For example, do some sort of busy work (like the dishes), but where she can see you.  Talk to her while you work, but let her experiment with her food independently...

She'll get the hang of it soon...

Branwen - My DS is also doing the same thing.  Actually, he does pick up the foods - but only to throw them to the floor.  We're having fun watching things fall right now!  Too funny to watch.  I try really hard not to laugh and encourage the behavior!

Yay!  This is great news!  Yes, avos were slippery, so thanks for the tip.  Oh, I'm so glad I'm doing this right- it seems every new phase brings new fun but with new challenges!

Once she gets the hang of it you might find like my lo that she then wants to do it all herself and wont let you feed her just like my lo did
