Why oh Why?--so confused again
« on: September 19, 2005, 19:09:18 pm »
Why is is that once you think you have it figured aout they have tochange on you.  Lindsey has been playing through her afternoon nap so today I though I would try to keep her up a little longer in the am so she went for her first nap at 11:30 and slept til 1:00.  So, she did ok til now and started acting tired and I forgot to say she did not seem all that tired this am when I put her down except for fussing which I was not sure if it was because she was tired or because she knew what was coming or if she just did not want to take a nap.  So anyway, I just layed her back down at 2:55.  She is not yet asleep but just babbling.  I don't know what to do.  If she does not sleep now I guess it will be the same as yesterday with only one nap and then sleeping from 8 pm to 8 am with a 1.5 hour nap.  Yesterday she slept from 10:45 til 12:10 and I gave her 45 min to fall asleep for her afternoon nap which she never did.  I don't want to move her to one nap just yet but I don't know what else to do as she just does not want to sleep in the afternoon anymore.  I am really worried that if I do move her to one nap she will start with nightwakings or waking up too early.  Yesterday since she did not take an afternoon nap she got really cranky at supper time which we were out for and then she ended up conking out in the car on the way home for about 10 minutes at 7 pm.  When we got home she woke up of course, and then we gave her a bath and she went to bed at 8 ish pm and slept til 8 this am.  It is 3:10 and she is still up there babbling away and banging on the crib, I hope not with her head.   Hard Headed little stinker.  Now she is laughing at something.  Lord help me!    I can't help but laugh typing this and listening to her, if I don't I think I would go nuts.

Oh, Lynne, I remember that age ALL too well! It was right around 10-11 mo that Tyler was doing the exact same thing. It drove me nuts. Some days he'd skip the AM nap, some days the PM nap, and I never knew which one. Either way, he'd be ridiculously cranky by the time dinner rolled around. It sucked. I went ahead and cold turkeyed him to 1 nap at 10.5 mo, and it didn't last. He frequently fell asleep during lunch with food in his mouth, and started with the early wakings within a week. That made it pretty easy to go back to 2 naps, but the early wakings took a little longer to go away for good. He finally transitioned to 1 nap for good a couple months later at 13 mo. Between 10-13 mo, his naps were all over the place, and it was ugly. Totally normal.

What we did end up doing was limit his naps big time. I know everyone tries to avoid short naps like the plague, but I just needed to keep him on 2 naps until he could handle longer awake time without getting overtired. I never let his AM nap go beyond 1 hr, and we started treating the PM nap like a catnap and woke him after 30-45 min. Eventually, both of his naps shortened on their own to 30 min each. When he started skipping THOSE, that's when I knew it was time to make the switch to 1 nap. It took a little experimentation to find the right sleep times to get us through it, and we had to adjust often for sleepy days, but it worked. And believe it or not, when we did cold turkey him to 1 nap at 13 mo, he only had a few rough days of taking 1 pitiful 30 min nap before lengthening it on his own.

Hang in there...that's such a rough nap age, but it will pass!

Well, she finally went to sleep(or she is faking it).   It took her 35 minutes before she fell asleep.  I know this sounds bad but now I hope she does not sleep too long.  So, Tyler's mommy, when you would wake him after an hour in the am would he be real cranky?  I guess I may have to try that.  I plan to keep trying for two naps until she is at least 12-13 months old.   It just seems weird to wake them after an hour but if it will help I may just have to try it.  How much total sleep should they be getting at this age?  Is it still 14-15 hours or is it less now?

Hi Lindsey,
As you know from my previous posts we are going through the same thing. Finally got it tweaked and today we had problems again, same thing as before taking ages 20 mins to fall asleep for afternoon nap. So if it happens tomorrow then I will cut the morning nap short by 5 mins. At the moment we are doing 40 mins morning and I wake her or she is awake and waiting which until today has given me 2 hours in the afternoon. I figure if she is slowly cutting down to one then I need to cut out the morning hence the 5 minutes less. 2 months ago the morning nap was 50 minutes then I woke her. It's not fun is it!

It's actually a bit less now, somewhere around 13.75-14 hrs per day. It's just an average, but you can see where 12 hrs of sleep doesn't leave a lot of room for 2 naps. Yes, Tyler was sometimes cranky after being woken early, but sometimes I'd put him down for his PM nap a bit earlier if it seemed he needed a little more sleep. It varied a lot from day to day, but all I cared about was preserving 2 naps until he was better able to handle the longer awake time for 1 nap. HTH!

Thanks everyone.  She ended up sleeping til 4:15 and I put her to bed at 8:00 pm.  I will keep trying to preserve the 2 naps.

I must be lost but why would cutting back to one nap cause early wakings?  Is it because they would be going to bed earlier then??

Today, and I hope this was a one time thing, my 7 month old decided to stay awake from 12 noon until his bedtime at 7pm!!!    This is way out of the ordinary!!  What really threw me for a loop was that he was not cranky at all!  Please tell me he's not asking for one nap a day already!!  This was a fluke right????  Any thoughts?  He sleeps 11 -12 hours at night and usually naps in the am for 1.5 hours and the same for the afternoon!!!

Thanks
