When will the 45 mins nap ever end
« on: September 26, 2005, 14:47:18 pm »
When will my lo go back to sleep after 45 mins.  She is 14 weeks old.

I try not to overstimulate her before bedtime. I lay her down in her cot and then iron in her bedroom she goes down like a dream, I leave her when she is drowsey and she knows I have gone, thats fine.  45 mins later she wakes up crying and I go to her, immediately (I have tried letting her cry for 5 mins, no better, she gets so wound up).  The sssshhh is fine but not the pat.  I resettle her after about 15 mins. She doesn't like to be held, thats fine but the rest of her nap is fitful.  She goes down for another 20 mins before her next feed.

Am I doing this right.  I have been trying to get her to go to sleep through the 45 mins light stage for the last 6 weeks and seem to be getting nowhere.

Her nightimes are brilliant though.

Any suggestions.

Hi, sorry to hear that things are a bit difficult at the moment.
A few things : Swaddling can really help, also like you say making sure you keep things low key in terms of activity before the nap and watch carefully for the sleepy cues. It sounds as though you know when she will wake, so, it may be worth going in 5 mins before and as she stirs, place a hand on her a apply a little pressure. Sometimes this can be enough to send them back into the next sleep cycle.

hi
my lo was the dreaded 45 min napper as well.  she started this at 8 weeks and continued short naps until 6 months.  (her night sleep was always good)...i tried to extend the naps, but never could.  so we always had short awake times and short naps.  but at about 6 months, we increased her awake time to 2-2.5 hours and then her naps magically lengthened on their own.  now she sleeps 1.5 hours twice a day usually.  i did a lot of research on infant sleep and learned that it is NORMAL for babies under 6 months to have short naps.  so don't feel bad if you can't extend them much.  after 6 months, the sleep center in the brain matures, allowing for longer naps.  good luck!!

Hi, yes I hear what you are saying about swaddling. My lo sometimes used to respond in that way and I used to think he hated it. According to Tracy, this kind of response, is usually due to them being overtired or overstimulated as waving their arms and legs about /flailing aroung is not done consciously. I must admit, I persevered and it helped a lot.

Basically i would say they would sleep if they need to, dont try and force the situation if you have been trying for that long and nothing works then take it that your baby knows what it wants if it is tired it would sleep. I spent ages trying to get mine to sleep longer but no success and it ended up driving me mad, but then i chilled and decided that they baby knew best, not some book

I agree, my lo who is not 6.5 months old was a 45 min napper.  I tried to extend the naps but nothing worked.  She is having better naps now at 6.5 months, although some days she still only has a few 45 min's.

Yes you are doing it exactly right and the fact that you can get her back to sleep is a blessing!  What she is doing is normal - From 0-3 months babies work on organizing their night sleep. From 3-6 they work on organizing their day sleep.

She is almost 4mos - correct?  You can start to very, very gradually move her to 4hr hour EASY.  The increase A time usually gets rid of the 45min nap.  Since she is not yet 4mos, i would do the extra A time as part of her nap wind down...so very quite, not sitimulating, etc.

Hope that helps.  If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to come back.

Thanks for all the replys.  She is nearly 15 weeks, but she was born 3 weeks early so do I go by she is 15 weeks or 12 weeks from her due date ? :?

She can only stay awake for 1hr 10 mins - 1hr 20 mins. She normally takes 4.5 - 5oz every feed now for the last few days.  I think I will stick to 3hr EASY until she can stay awake for at least 1hr 30 - 1hr 45 and she isn't feeding as well.  I'm gradually increasing her awake time. Is the wrong way to go  :?

Thanks chell, I agree. I don't think she is just ready to go the 4 hr easy.  She is doing well though. 5lb 9oz at birth. I had her weighed last week and she is 11lb 13oz now.   :D
