Q for mommies with lo's that drink smoothies...
« on: September 26, 2005, 15:59:30 pm »
Xavier doesn't drink enough milk so I'm thinking about giving him smoothies (made with milk, yogurt and fruit -right?).  I have a question for those mommies who do this to get their lo's to drink milk - does it make them not want regular milk anymore?  I'd like Xavier to drink plain milk too, but I'm a bit worried that if I give him a smoothie, that's all he'll want.  Sooo....what to do???  :?

P.S. Any good smoothie recipes?

Adrian loves milk, I give him smoothie just for a change, so smoothies didn't influence his milk intake. But, then, he loves water too.

I have been making smoothies for John probably 12-18 months now.  H=It doesn't affect his regular milk consumption  at all.  I don't give him milk at every meal; sometimes he gets water, and occasionally diluted juice. I try to see that he gets the recommended number of dairy servings a day in some form---milk, yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese.

We actually started to give Ewan smoothies to increase his fruit intake :D .  On the days that he has smoothies his milk intake does go down but I don't worry because he is getting the appropriate amount of dairy with the smoothie and other sruff he eats throughout the day.

I give Daikon smoothies for dessert. I never even thought about the milk thing. He just assumes it's like ice cream and goes to town on it.

My simple recipe (in no specific amounts):

Frozen bananas (when one starts to look old I slice it up, put it in a tupperware and throw it in the freezer for smoothies or banana bread)

Frozen strawberries (I buy these already frozen)

one or two fat free strawberry or raspberry yogurts

enough milk to keep my blender blades movin'

I only make enough for that time or it gets rock hard if stuck back in the freezer .

Have fun......

Well today, Xavier wouldn't drink any milk or water (only 1-2 oz).  What is up with that?!?!?!  I made a smoothie and he drank a bit of it.  How can he not want liquids?  Won't he get dehydrated?!?!  He's still peeing okay but it's not like his food has a lot of liquid in it.  Argh!!!

When I give my kids smoothies I give it to them in a different cup to usual milk.

They don't seem to associate smoothies with milk IYKNIM?

Tip on the banana's..........they freeze well in their skins too.  Just throw them in the freezer when they start to look old!

And the dehydration thing.........keep offering drinks, he will take it if thirsty.  Try slushy "ice" - ie juice, water - sometimes they eat this instead of drinking!

I have been making smoothies...or milkies ( what Kennedy has called them) since Kennedy was 7 months old.
My kids get a milky every night after supper. I use .....
MILK  either plain milk ( homo),  soy milk( vanilla flavor)
YOGURT  I use petite danone ( no chunks) any where from 1-2 depending on how much supper was eaten.
FRUIT    banana is their favorite. I find that strawberries or fruit with seads can clog up the sippy cup spout.

Kennedy has had these every night before bed for over 3 years.
Thomas likes them but not as much as Kennedy. He likes vanilla milk with a bit of strawberry flavor.

My kids like fruit and milk..I just have petite kids and used them to fatten them up.... and give them a full belly before bed.

If your lo doesn't drink enough milk (or eat enough calcium foods), do you offer milk all day?  Or still offer water/juice, etc... and stick to offering milk during meals?

Luckily John likes most dairy foods.  I offer him lots of things throughout the day - cheese, yogurt, cottage, milk, smoothies....whatever I think he will take. He is old enough to tell me what he wants.

I can't remember how old Xavier is, but I'm guessing he will fall into the toddler range on the food pyramid guidelines.  He only needs 4 servings from the dairy group, which is the equivilent of 2 cups of milk (16 oz).  1 serving of dairy for him would be 1/4 cup milk, yogurt, or abour 1/2 oz cheese.  When I make a smoothie I use 1/2 c. yogurt and 1/4 cup of milk, so he is really getting 3 servings there.

If you are afraid he is rejecting all liquids, you can try icies, like Laura's mom suggested, or my favorite -- popsicles made from diluted juice (I use carrot and apple so I sneak a veggie in too.)  I freeze juice in ice trays anduse the cubes in cups of water.  John likes watching the ice and it flavors his water some. Juicy fruits like grapes and watermelon are good sources of fluids.  And maybe soups.   And I apoligize if I am making suggestings that are not apprpriate for his age yet.

Well, I tried the smoothie, and he didn't particularly like it any more than milk.  Oh well.  He does drink at least 8 oz. of milk a day and he eats a bit of yogurt and cheese.  Also likes those Heinz toddlers biscuits which, thankfully, are calcium and iron fortified.  I guess he's getting enough.  It's hard not to worry. :)
