Water with solids?

I've read that once you start solids, you should introduce a bit of water ( a very, very small amount to start with). What's everyone's experience with that? DS is on cereal and is ff and is almost 5 months.

olivia is 7 mo and started solids around 6 mo - i introduced the sippy cup a couple of weeks ago or so and she basically played with it until last week when it finally "clicked" and now i give it to her at lunch and dinner solids - she actually picks it up and takes a sip every now and then. mostly put water in it and now am putting some formula in as well (made the mistake of putting only water in cup with dd1 - who was EBF - and at 2yo she still will only drink water from her cup  )
