yoghurts and corn?
« on: September 27, 2005, 23:29:56 pm »
my lo is almost 6mths and we have been on solids for about 3 weeks.  I am starting to introduce his third solid meal later this week.  I am just wondering how early can you give them yoghurt?  I have also bought some cream corn and if I mash this up further is this an okay vege to give?  No where do I read mentions corn?  I personally love it and thought it might be another new vege to introduce.

Also, after dinner does everyone give a desert ie fruit or yoghurt after veges?

He so far is tolerating everything well - haven't noticed any allergies.

Thanks for your help

The Yo Baby yogurt website says you can safely introduce yogurt anywhere from 9 to 12 months.  Not sure about the corn, although some baby foods have corn in them so I assume its probably a go :D

This website might be helpful...it says 8 mo for yogurt, 10-12 mo for corn.

I've seen some sources that say 6 mo for yogurt. Corn can be very hard to digest, that's why it's typically not offered to younger babies. HTH!

Corn is actually "technically a grain" even though we eat it as a vegetable & should probably be left later not earlier.

thanks for your help.  all the information that you get is sooo confusing :?   i asked my dr today and she said both were fine to start at 6mths.  corn as long as it was pureed.  the yoghurt is more of a "making sure he doesnt prefer that to veges etc.  I might wait a few weeksand then try

thanksagain

Lisa is your Dr  a GP or Pediatrician? As I would ask your local child & health nurse as many Drs & 'old school Pedi's' are not very up-to-date on what solids are best when. The Australian health nurses in each state are actually the best informed on issues for healthy children.

I say that as the info I have from when ds#1 was on solids from my early childhood nurse, suggests corn after 9mo & to hold off yogurt until 9mo (& other processed dairy eg cheese) if their is any history of family intolerance to dairy. Ie if you, your dh, siblings or parents have problems with dairy foods.

In the UK you can get yoghurt made with follow on milk so that's OK from 6 months but leave cows milk yoghurt until later.

From a purely practical point of view and this may be TMI  by on the corn, I would leave it a while.  DS loves eating individual kernals but they come out the other end EXACTLY the same so I would think it was a bit indigestible for a young tummy.
