What To Give For Breakfast?
« on: September 29, 2005, 19:59:07 pm »
Hi!
I have been weaning DS for a few weeks now, I started him on baby rice for breakfast but he seemed to get quite constipated so on the advice of my MIL(who is a health visitor) I switched to natural full fat yoghurt.  Since reading previous threads saying that DS is too young for yoghurt am slightlyconfused as to what to give him.  He hasnt had any ill effects from the yoghurt infact he loves it but if he developed an allergy I would never forgive myself. Should I give him fruit for breakfast until the age people are recommeding it is okay for him to have yoghurt and if so which is best fruit to give? Any advice is welcome, what do you give for breakfast?

What To Give For Breakfast?

Hi

When i started on breakfasts I used porridge.  I think if memory serves me correctly it was cow and gates organic version.  I didn't use the fortified version as I was told that the extra iron added can be constipating.  Once Matthew was 6 months and had tried a  range of fruit purees i started adding fruit puree to the porridge.  I made all my own baby foods and purees, but i did use the heinz organic purees(simply fruit range)  that come in little plastic pots (later used to freeze individual portions!)  I think one pot lasted breakfast and tea, so the lids helped keep it fresh. Organix do a great range of different flavoured fruit purees which are cheaper than the heinz, i think they are called fruit doubles.  They come in pots like yoghurt pots.

Even now, I add these pots of puree to his ready brek.

Once I introduced wheat products etc then I gradually changed to weetabix / ready brek, but the baby porridge is more nutritious.

I give dd baby oatmeal (either mixed with breastmilk or water and fruit), and the first fruit I introduced was prunes to combat any constipation caused by the rice cereal and the iron in both the cereals and her vitamins.  Dd is almost 9mos now, and I was going to ask about yogurt at her 9mos check-up next week.

The absolute earliest recommendation I've seen for yogurt is 6 mo...most sources say 7-8 mo, though. It's up to you if you want to continue to offer it, since he's doing okay with it. For breakfast, I always gave baby cereal mixed with fruit or veggie puree (he liked the veggies better, don't ask me why!). Pears and prunes are great first fruits, they're very easily digested and have lots of fiber. There are other kinds of baby cereal that aren't as constipating as rice, like baby oatmeal, barley, and mixed grain when you've tried all the different kinds. Tyler could only eat the barley cereal for the longest time because all the others constipated the heck out of him!

I don't worry about serving "breakfast" foods.  DD doesn't care.  I started her with fruits (ripe pears, bananas) and vegetables (yams is a favorite & easy to prepare) - I try a new one every few days and just build from there.   I'd sometimes mix them with brown rice cereal to stretch the fresh foods. I haven't introduced any animal products (except for occasional formula) - my concern is with the hormones in them.

Danone do a baby fromage frais to be used from 4mo, is there any difference to what you are using?
If there's been no reaction i would saty with it, I know babies that are allergic to oats, so no porridge, or wheat, so no toast, or dairy, so no yoghurts!! So if he's fine, carry on, he could be allergic to the other suggestions! esp if MIL/HV recommended it.

I used to give baby rice mixed with fruit but now give weetabix with whole cows milk or full fat yoghurt with fruit.  I am going to try readybrek too.  Lots of vits etc. in those. x
