Crying when put down for naps!!??
« on: September 30, 2005, 08:35:36 am »
Hi,

My little one is on a 3 hourly routine for a good few
weeks now. He is now 6.5 wks old and still cries everytime we put him
down for a nap regardless of the fact that we have been doing the same
routine and even using the same words 'sleeptime' but he still
needs to cry himself to sleep.
We look out for his tired signs and then take him to his nursery, draw the curtains, put on his fave lullaby and gently swaddle him while whispering to him that it is sleep time. As soon as we swaddle he lets loose and cries! We then pick him up and gently rock him while 'shhing' and then when he is has quietened and closes his eyes and starts to go a bit limp we then lower him into his cot and creep out quietly.

Last couple of days he has been crying loads and practically screaming before eventually wearing himself out and then falling asleep, meanwhile we are still trying to comfort, rock gently and 'shhing'. And then wakes up again after 10-15, and we have to go through it all again! This can happen twice or more!!

He has been doing this each nap time...is there anything we can do to get
him to fall asleep without stressing himself out with crying so much each time???

Would very much appreciate any advice...

Thanks!

I would suggest maybe shortening the waketime.  My little guy is only about a week older, and he's only up for about 50 to 55 minutes.  Also, you may try to put him down as soon as he's fussing instead of winding down more ... he may be trying to tell you "Just let me sleep!"

Just my 2 cents...

I'm just going to add that overtiredness and overstimulation can make it difficult for a newborn/young infant to fall asleep/stay asleep. That's why an infant will sleep for only 10 min, 20 min at a time.
