How much bottle after eating solids?????
« on: September 30, 2005, 16:13:48 pm »
I'm not sure if the girls are geting enough liquid....
They eat 2.5 tbsp of cereal in the am, then they will only take (on average) 2 oz of their bottle... is that okay?
They rarely finish a bottle anymore.... so during the lunch feed, we give them solids ( sweet potatos, cream corn, etc... and a little fruit at the end)
after they have had their bottle. I know in the BW book it says to always give the solids first... but even at lunch my lo's won't take more than 3-4 oz before solids.

During the day they are getting approx 18 oz of formula mixed with about total 3 oz- 5 oz of solids... should I be concerned or are they getting enough?

They go to bed at 7:15-7:30 every night and don't usually wake until 530/6 am... so I think they are getting enough food????

Please let me know what you think...

( a few weeks ago we had them weighed and Maisie only gained 3 oz in 2 weeks and Makaylee gained 6 oz in the two weeks.... the nurse said it was fine because at 6 months their weight starts to plateau??)

Actually, I think in the book that Tracy suggests doing bottle first, then followed by solids an hour later.

I personally don't do that, but I do feed bottle first at breakfast, then solids.  Then the rest of the day I do solids first, then bottle.

You might try feeding solids (or bottle), and then waiting 30 min to 1 hr, and then trying the bottle (or solids - whichever one you didn't do).  Some lo's just fill up on one or the other, and then don't want anything else for a while.

I've also taken to giving Ethan solids at 6 pm, then we go for our evening walk, then come back and give him his bottle at 7 pm.  He eats a lot more solids that way, and then will finish most, if not all, of his bottle.

Good luck!

Like Tammy said, Tracy does recommend bottle first, then solids. No harm in doing it the other way around, unless your girls aren't finishing their bottles...and it sounds as if they aren't. Keep in mind that formula should still be their main source of nutrition until they're weaned from it, so you may want to try switching the order around. If you do switch the order and find that they still aren't interested in finishing their bottles, that's a cue that you need to cut back on the solids until it balances out somewhat. And since appetite changes all the time, it's a big guessing game and takes lots of experimenting to find the middle ground! Good luck!

I agree with Tammy and Melissa. Switch the bottle and solid feeding, and keeo atleast an hour between the two.
