Baby signing
« on: October 02, 2005, 06:21:06 am »
Hello, I have been hearing lots about baby signing recently and was wondering if anyone has tried it and what results they got. Also, I would love a recommendation in terms of the best way to go about it - what books are useful etc etc. My LO is 3.5 months at the moment and I can't wait for her to start communicating!  :)

Hi, I have been signing with Jacob since he was 4- 5 months old. It has taken him a while, but he started to get the hang of it at 9 months, when he started to sign for milk! It is really wonderful, being able to communicate with him, and very empowering for him too!

It takes the same as BW methods - patience, persistence and consistency.
I have 'sign with your baby' by Joseph Garcia. Its a kit with video adn 2 books. Its based on American sign language.

Id say go  for it its great fun!

Hi there,

I recently read a BW thread regarding baby signing, you may find the information useful....

The below sites are also great resources. my lo is nearly 3 months old and I'm keen to start soon too. They organise classes.... maybe we can create our own class if there are enough interested parties!

Apparently signing is different between countries (you'd think that it would be universal?!@#)

Good luck with it!

We have baby signing books by Linda Acredolo for parents and board books for babies.  We started signing with ds when he was about 6 months and he started signing back "all done" when he was around 9-10 months.  Then nothing, and we were a bit frustrated, until 13 months, and he basically EXPLODED with the sign language, learning by himself from the board books (with reinforcement from us).  It was like all of a sudden he wanted to communicate.  He now does signs ALL THE TIME, about 30-35 of them.  It is so cute, and so nice that he can tell us what he wants or what's on his mind (he's 15 months now).  It's really great!

The books say don't start until they're about 6-7 months, because you won't get a response and you may get frustrated and give up.  Don't give up!  It's so worth it!  Some babies pick it up sooner than others.  It's important to start small - only one or two signs.  We did "all done" and "milk" but he only picked up the all done sign.  Then we introduced "food" and "drink" (different from milk, which was BFing).  Because he didn't do those until later, we didn't introduce any more.  One of my friends tried to do too much too quickly, so her dd didn't pick up any signs.

So there's our story.  If you want more info, feel free to PM me!

We'd love to start learning baby signing (my LO is almost 5 months old now) - do anyone know any good books or DVDs for UK baby signing?

Thanks :)

In the UK there are some great resources - if you cant get to a class, Mr Tumble on Cbeebies is good to watch.

Amazing Baby has a good book of signs, and baby signing companies have resources you can buy!!
