Going from breast to cup
« on: October 03, 2005, 13:41:01 pm »
I am currently trying to get my 7 1/2 month old to feed from a cup as he will shortly be going to nursery one day a week.
I've tried the haberman feeder, an avent bottle and an avent cup and he just puts them in his mouth and plays with them even though we know he's hungry. My husband tries and has no luck and as soon as I sit him down he grabs hold of my top and breastfeeds with no problem.
Any ideas on how to get him to feed from the cup.
Thanks from a very desperate mum

Hi there Sue,

My EBF lo also did not take well to a bottle. She now drinks from a cup, however messily. Anyway, what we did was treat it like "dinner". DH and I would eat our dinner. Arwyn would be sitting in the middle of the table in her Bumbo seat. After dinner, we would help her drink EBF from a cup. As this was not her regular feeding time, she would not be very hungry but would take the milk. At first, we only put 1/2 oz in the cup because it gets very messy otherwise.

The cup we used is from IKEA. It is sold as a sippy cup but we took the lid off. The reason we chose this cup is because it has nice thin handles for her to hold and once the lid is off, there are no threads since it is a pull-off lid.

We started this about 4/5 weeks ago. Just this morning I put water in her sippy cup and she took it too.

Good luck!

It is probably something you've already tried but we did lots of demonstration stuff with me doing exaggerated sucking on the cup. He may be interested if mummy and daddy drink out of the cup too.

My lo never took a bottle.  Around 6 months or so, I started handing her the avent sippy cup with the valve removed and just water in it.  She got to understand that the water comes out when it's tipped and eventually she started sucking on it a bit. Then we tried with the valve in.  In and out a few times, anyway!  She figured out if she still sucked, she got water.  Then we tried different types of sippy cups to see which she liked best (She likes the NUby soft spout!).  And THEN we tried EBM!  Also, every time I'm drinking water from a regular cup (which is pretty often!), I offer her some.  Spills a lot, but she's getting better.  Good luck!
