cat nap or not?
« on: October 03, 2005, 23:18:19 pm »
Just curious at what age a baby is able to eliminate the catnap?

My little lady is 6.5 months and takes two naps in the day (1-2 hours generally). When I gave her a cat nap then she had a difficult time sleeping and didn't want to go to bed until 2. 5 hours later (which is past her normal bedtime and threw off her little routine).

Any thoughts? From looking at other posts from moms of 7 month old babies it seems that babies stay awake longer as the day progresses. Is that true?

(meaning awake in the a.m. for approx 2 hours, then for 2.5-3 after the next nap, and for 4 hours after the afternoon nap...until bedtime).

For example:
7 a.m. (or a little earlier) up and eat
9 nap (1.5 hours)
11 & 12 nurse then solids
1:30 nap (1.5 hours or less)
3 awake til 7 pm bedtime.

just curious! It seemed like I was the only mom not picking up on the secret code of nap shifts  :D

thanks for the help in advance.

Yep, time to get rid of that cat nap!

Generally speaking, most infants eliminate the catnap by 6/7 months because their waking time tends to increase to 2.5-3 hours or more. Again, this is MOST infants...there are obviously some that don't follow that rule because they never read the manule :P

I've been trying to follow the following routine for our ds:

7 am - wake
9:30 or 10 am - nap 1
11 or 11:30 am - wake
2 or 2:30 pm - nap 2
3:30 or 4 pm - wake
7:30 pm - bedtime

So far it's been working pretty well.  Our ds only just gave up his catnap just before he turned 7 months, I think.  Good luck!
