swaddling vs. self-soothing, 8 weeks
« on: October 11, 2005, 19:33:32 pm »
Hey, another question here.  We haven't been using a paci (he doesn't really like it, then cries when it falls out mid-nap...plus he generally settles okay without it), but Jasper (8 wks) has expressed an interest in chewing on his fist, which we're happy to encourage.
Currently to get him to sleep (the way we find works with a 2.75 yo sister running around!) is to get him really drowsy by swaying and patting for 3-4 minutes in his darkened room, with a little white noise, then lay him down and pat for a minute or so (5 minutes of quiet is literally all I can depend on!).  He sometimes fusses and after 5 minutes (sooner if he's really crying) I go in and pat his bum for a minute and he's asleep right away.
This works, but he's also trying to get to his fist through the swaddle, and I think this might help him get himself to sleep, rather than fussing and having me pat.  I've tried leaving one arm out and he just flails or wakes himself after one sleep cycle.  We also tried the aussie swaddle and just couldn't seem to get it right.
I guess I'm just wondering how I can encourage self-soothing and keep swaddling for awhile longer...?
Thanks!
Amanda

Maybe I can help you sort out the Aussie swaddle? We did it with Tyler until he was 8 mo or so, and it's really the best of both worlds if you've got a fist sucker. Let me know if I can help!
