Is my lo ready to start solids?
« on: October 12, 2005, 10:24:33 am »
My lo is losing interest in feeding. She is 16 weeks. She is crying for food when I put her down at nap times, (she has 1hr 30 -1hr 45 mins activity time).  I'm in the middle of transitioning her from 3hr easy to 4hr easy.

When I put a rattle into her hand she always puts it up to her mouth to taste.  She has more than double her birth weight. She is more interested in what I am eating. When I put a spoon in her mouth she doesn't thrust it out.  When I take it out she wonders why I put it in there. I think she is teething as well. She has been holding her head up since she was about 10 weeks. She is very active.

What do you think?

Why not try a little and see her response? If she is not ready she won't take the food.

Thanks for that, my mum said that as well.  She was 3 weeks early, I thought she wasn't ready. I will give it a go tomorrow when I am at my mums  :)  I think she is very advanced for her age as well, just like my nephew, he began taking solids at 3 months.  My brother and I were just the same.  My brother began taking solids at 4 weeks   because he was crying for food after taking a 70z bottle.  I was taking solids at 2 months.

Since you asked... , here's a differing view!

Current research and recommendations from ALL the major health organizations now recommend waiting until 6 months to start solids - and for good reasons.  Babies stomachs just aren't mature enough to properly digest solid food much before then. No matter how advanced your lo might be in other areas. Starting solids too soon can lead to an increased risk of allergies and digestive problems, not to mention more gas and nightwakings. And starting proteins too early can potentially damage their kidneys!

Around 3 and 4 months, babies start to salivate more and put things in their mouth as part of the developmental process of learning and exploring their environment.  They look with interest at the world around them and at what we're doing.  Watching us eating food included.  But that DOESN'T mean that their bodies are prepared to handle solid food.  Your lo may well eat the solids if you offer it, but it doesn't mean it's really good for her - babies will eat dirt if it's offered! Besides, for the first year, milk is the most important source of nutrition - solids are just for practice. :)

Finally, people always seem to use the example that so-and-so (often a parent or grandparent) started solids at such-and-such an age and were fine.  To that I remind them that those people were also probably brought home from the hospital in a basket resting on the back seat of the car.  Yes, they survived that too, but I wouldn't want to do that to my child.

You mentioned that you're transitioning from 3 to 4 hrs right now.  I would give that a chance to settle in before starting something like solids. Your lo will have years and years of eating solid food - what's the rush now?  In some cultures, solids aren't started until close to one year.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.  You'll hear lots of people encouraging you to start early - I just want to make sure you get the other side of the coin!  Good luck with whatever you choose!

I gave her some solids yesterday and she didn't like it.  So I have said I will leave it for a few more weeks.

Just a question on giving solids.  When do you give them solids.  Before the milk, after the milk or a little while later?

It's really a matter of preference. I always preferred to give breast/bottle first, then solids about 1 hr later, so Tyler would fill up on breastmilk or formula. Some moms reverse the order or can do both at one sitting, so it comes down to what works best for you and your baby!
