in australia the recommendation is 12 mo for it to be given as a drink - earlier for cookig and on cereal.

Hi there:

DS just turned one, and about a week and a half before that is when I switched him from formula to full fat milk (3%, Homogonized).  Here in Canada, we are told to wait until 1 to change at all, although cooking with it (in mashed potatoes) is okay.  When I switched him, I also mixed the formula and milk for 3-4 days before giving him just milk

I was advised by the midwife at the hospital that you shouldnt give cows milk until 1 year old for 2 reasons, firstly because there is not enough iron in cows milk and secondly because the protein in cows milk is not easily digested by the baby....for your info this is what i have read

Babies who are exposed to cow's milk before their first birthday are more likely to be anemic, have diarrhea or vomiting, and/or experience an allergic reaction (the proteins in milk are more numerous than those in other milk products, such as the yogurt). The excessive protein load in cow's milk can also overload a baby's kidneys. It is deficient in vitamins C, E, and copper. It is harder to digest as well, often causing intestinal blood loss.

of course like anything there are differing opinions and at the end of the day you have to do what you want

I think I'll post this elsewhere too, but what if I know my son was allergic to milk at 9 months (in NextStep formula)? he wants to be weaned and is taking less and less interest in the bottle, but I'm concerned about the nutrients he wouldn't be getting if he's off both formula and milk.
can anyone at least point me to a better thread if this isn't the "right" one?
Thanks!
