I got crazy today and gave Asher two tiny bits of turkey bacon this morning and a few tiny bits of chicken from my lunch.      He liked them both so maybe I'll actually prepare some of his own.  He's been surprisingly good at eating lately -- liking a wide variety of tastes and textures now it seems.  Doesn't care for kiwi though.  Too sour, I guess!

And the spit up, or lack there of, has been going really well.  He still spits up, but nothing like it was.  It's pretty limited to just two periods a day, mornings after BF/before breakfast and afternoons after BF/before dinner.  I guess he doesn't have enough solids in his tummy to keep the liquid down during those times.  :?:  Does anyone feed breakfast before BF or a bottle?  How does that work?  I'm thought about switching those around, but I wonder if I could prepare breakfast fast enough for him.  I've tried giving him a "snack" right after BF in the morning, but that didn't stop the spit up until I actually fed him breakfast.

Deb, don't feel silly about the dream feed!  For goodness sake, you were certainly not the only one!  Asher still woke once for a full feed until he was over 7 months old!  In retrospect, I SHOULD have done a dreamfeed and maybe I would have gotten more sleep in those first 7 months!      As you know, every baby's different so I think it was good you went with your gut and kept it as long as you did.  Glad to hear dropping it is going well so far.  Lord knows we all need the sleep!     Sometimes you just do what you gotta do!

Branwen, I was reading an article by Dr. Sears in one of my parenting magazines the other day.  He was going over the popular questions parents ask him and one was about helping their child to walk sooner.  He basically said there's a wide time frame for milestones, each baby is different, and there wasn't too much we should or could do.  He said the more important measurement is if your baby is doing more this month than last.  If not, then there is cause to concern.  I think Deborah echoed this in the PT's concern about Maya slowing down this month instead of moving more.  You mention that Eirwen is rolling all over, so she's gaining mobility and that IS big improvement!   :D   However, I would have a bit of concern about her not wanting to put pressure on her legs because I believe that IS a milestone that should have hit by now if I remember right.  So I'd get it checked out to see if she's okay (not in pain, etc) and if there's something you should do to help her gain leg strength (like the jumper or walker??).
Asher's tantrum behavior varies, but it's often yelling/grunting and tighting up all his muscles.  Sometimes he throws himself back, breaks into a cry, bites, or hits.

Joanne, could Hannah be cold?  Hot?  Seperation anxiety?  Does she have a luvie?  Teething?  I'd be surprised if she were hungry.

Kate, Asher doesn't play a whole lot with other babies right now.  We occasionally make it to playgroups.  But I don't sweat it right now because I read that children don't really learn to share and make friends before 2 or 3 years old.  Before then, they're just playing side by side really, not "together."  I read (and personally believe), the time and bond with their parents is most important at this age.  Asher sure does love to watch other children though, even if he doesn't know what to do!

Hazel, when Asher learned to pull up, it was from a crawling position.  At first he pulled up to his knees, then a couple weeks later, he stood.  First he goes to his knees, then to one knee with one foot flat on the ground, then pulls/pushes up from there.

christine - i know it is stupid that i cannot let go of the breakfast thing and now just knowing it is not just her (and is more "normal" i guess) i feel better. i am not the only one sittig there praying their lo will eat something.
branwen - we spend at leats a 1/2 hr at meals.  because she also does not guzzle her bottle she already has it split so some on waking or 1/2 hr later and the rest as a top up before nap (if she wants it). we don't have yobaby here. i have tried several yogurts with fruit and she makes such a drama queen face
Heather - i have been told to consider that she just mightbe like adults who don't want breakfast.  she was drinking at least 20-24 oz per day but now that we took out the Df i worry (yesterday she took more at other feeds and her total at 4 feeds was probably 24oz, but today so far is touch and go  ) she is increasing her solids though as long as we offer lots of finger foods (yesterday she had quite a few FF - sweet potato, zucchini, watermelon, cheerios)

DF dropping not getting better, but worse   last night she woke 3 times (but resettled herself within 15 min thankfully) and then was up from 6:15 (and not very hungry) she drank only 100ml (3 oz) and ate some pear pieces and cheerios.  i feel like a chicken and want to just go back to Df before bed but i feel ridiculous DF a 9 mo old.  what do you think?  i am so tired from not getting GOOD sleep. i am thinking of asking for sleeping pills at my next checkup later this month.

julieb - we obviously were posting at the same time  :D  thanks for the support - that is what i have been thinking - i don't think with the PPD and taking alex's needs into consideration, that Dh/I could have handled any nightwakings or really early starts.  even tonight i am tempted to do a small Df because mondays i take alex to occassional care at 9am which means the earlliest Olivia can have her nap is 9:15 - 9:30 which is fine when she wakes around 6:45 but if she wakes at 6 +/- 15 min what will i do?? trying not to stress about what has not happened yet, but i don't like being back on unfamiliar territory

Okay i finally took some time to go to juss press and check out some of your kids- i saw asher, kelsey and luka - did i miss anyone else.  christine you did a website too - what was it again so i don't have to go back through these pages...

 Schae - ok your funniest moment had to be Luka as a girl - OMG i almost peed in my pants!
 julieb - i am seriously stunned watching asher - he is amazing.  it is not just that he is walking - he just seems so much further along than Liv (and don't worry i am not feeling bad about it - just in awe.  i thought alex was a clever kiddo crawling at 5 mo and all, but wowwee!)
 Heather - OMG the video of Kelsey with the dog where she is shaking her head so much she falls over - again i almost peed (yes - i have no bladder control after 2 kids  ) Hysterical!

we had a nice morning at the beach today - we had beautiful days this weekend and cool nights PERFECTION.  paid for it though cause Dh insisted on staying at the beach longer than i wanted and of course Olivia slept on the way home and owuld not go down for any more sleep so was up all afternoon - even with putting the girls down 1/2 hr  early Olivia was too tired to have her bottle (so Dh went back in after she fell asleep and was more chilled out and she woke and drank and went back to sleep  :D )  funny how 2 people can see things differently - he said "see i think she can increase her A time fine"  whereas i was saying - "next time we leave the beach in time to get home for naps" MEN!

Debra - that is like a man to think that her being awake and then falling asleep in the car is fine!  We went shopping yesterday afternoon, and were gone too long - Ethan fell asleep in the car on the way home.  Slept about 20 minutes before we got home.  Then would NOT go down for a nap the rest of the afternoon.  So, he was up from 2:30 until 7!  And he was not happy about it around 6!  :?

Julie - Ethan was the same with the spit-up - EVERYWHERE!  Now if he does spit up, it's just a little bit.  I personally think that it is the formula for him - it's just so rich.  I think when we make the switch to whole milk at a year, it'll be better.  Or hopefully gone before then!  Anyway, I feed solids before bottle at every meal.  For breakfast, I prepare his cereal before I even go get him in the morning.  That way he doesn't have to sit in his highchair while I fix his breakfast.

Food - well, let's see, we tried toast yesterday and today, and he seems to like to pick that up and eat it.  He still occasionally gags on it, but that's normal, I think.  Cut up peaches he won't pick up.  He will eat them sometimes, if you give them to him on a spoon, but not too many.  Still loves his puffs though.  I am going to go to the store this week and get some baby carrots, sweet potatoes, and maybe some little mini bagels for him.  Do you guys steam your vegetables as finger foods?

Teeth - I am sure that Ethan is teething now.  I see no teeth, but he has woken the past two nights, plus he is gnawing on his fingers right in the front now (where the two top front teeth would be).  I'm convinced.  I hope this doesn't take as long as the bottom two - those felt like they took months!

Deb/Tammy, I've had the same issue with outings and the afternoon naps.  Even if he doesn't sleep in the car and I get home in plenty of time, it seems like the extra stimulation just throws him off.  I end up either rocking him to sleep or giving up.  Asher went 2:30-7 the other day as well, though some of that was "quiet time" in his crib as I was TRYING to convince him to sleep.

Tammy, re: the finger food veggies, yes, I steam everything till it's practically mushy.  I use my veggie steamer a few times a day now!  You can make sweet potato fries or just steam the potato chunks (or microwave the whole potato), then cut them into smaller bite size pieces and let it cool.  You can grate raw veggies, but I haven't tried it with Asher.  Raw veggies aren't very gummable, so I don't know if he'd like them as much as the cooked.  Asher also likes califlower and brocolli (tried those after Vidya suggested), and peeled yellow summer squash.  You can also try overcooked spiral pasta.

Here's Asher's portrait of his Halloween costume, taken at Target.  Isn't he just the cutest frog ever?  Maybe I'm biased.

Hello All,

Just wanted to pass on Hannah's new favorite food - Barley Teething Biscuts, they are the Earth's Best brand. I found them at Earthfare, our local health food store. The great thing about them is that it keeps her busy for a while so I can do other things in the kitchen.

julieb, you're right, Hannah's not hungry in the midde of the night, I'm being lazy and nursing her is the quickest way to get her back to sleep. Well actually it started when we were away and DH didn't want her to cry in the hotel and disturb the other guests, SO that's how it started. BUT last night when she woke I picked her up, held her and tried talking to her in a soft voice and she fell back to sleep within 15 min. So, no more nursing in the middle of the night for her. I know it will take a bit, but hopefully she will be sleeping through the night again soon.

Will type more later since it's pm nap time now :)

Joanne

Julie - thanks for the tips re: steaming the veggies.  I may be asking you more questions this week!     :D   I don't think Ethan would like the raw grated veggies - he's not THAT into the texture yet!

I don't remember if I told you, but we had the same Halloween frog costume for Ethan!  Here's a couple of pics!

Hi Everyone, keep sharing your stories.  I LOVE reading your everday triumphs :D  and challenges  .

Deb, I'm slowly dropping the df again now that I'm sure she's fully adjusted to the time change.  We're at 3 oz and 8:30pm.  My goal is to have it dropped in a couple weeks cause I want to get a babysitter for dh's christmas party on Dec.9th and it would be really nice if she'd just sleep thru.  What time were you giving Olivia the df?  If you give it early then it shouldn't interfere with yours or Olivia's sleep.  For breakfast, emily has about a 5-6oz bottle then an hour later she'll eat 1tbsp of rice cereal mixed with 1tbsp of prunes and that lasts her till the next bottle at 11am.  She's not very hungry in the morning.  Also, she's still drinking between 20-25oz a day.  Oh, and we're on Jusspress too, Julie has a link to us off of her site.

Branwen, Yeeeaaah, I'm so glad you've sold your house and are moving soon!!!! :D  :D   Emily still doesn't roll over much but she does lots of walking while I hold her and bouncing in the jumper.  I wonder if a walker would encourage Eirwen? :?

Kate, Emily's only baby interactions have been with herself in the mirror  .  But I'm planning on going to our first playgroup at the end of the month.  Though I'm a bit worried of her catching a cold.

TammyJulieB, I find that on weekends we run errands so that she ends up falling asleep in the car around 1:30pm for about 20 mins so I keep her up till about 3:00, feed her next bottle early and then put her down for nap.  Seems to work really well!  If I wait till 4:00, she won't go down cause she thinks it might be bedtime.

JulieB, keep those Asher videos coming!  They entertain emily for a good 10mins everyday.  I tried your cup/noise thing but no luck with that.

Hazel, how did you teach Daniel to clap his hands?

Us, Busy few days here.  My mom and dad were up visiting, then we went to pick up our car and then the inlaws for lunch today.

I have the opposite problem with my doc, she talks and talks and I'm always trying to hurry her up so we can go before Emily gets too cranky.

I felt really grumbly and depressed on Saturday.  We had to drive about 1 hr to pick up our new (used) car that needed repairs and I was stuck in the back of our little old car with Emily and she moaned and groaned forever.  When we stopped for gas, I told dh I had to get out and raced out of the car crying my eyes out and started speed walking around the block.  I couldn't hack it anymore.  Anyways, dh gave me the new car to drive home and he drove Emily back in the old car.  And after a few minutes I could breathe again...the new car is so spacious!  It's amazing how just one day of constant moaning can turn me into a VERY miserable person.  Today though she was an Angel and I feel like myself again!

Does anyone know how to teach baby to put something into a box?

Good day/night everyone, Love Tarri

Tarri-the only thing I can say about teaching them anything is repetition.  Just do it over and over and over, and verbalize what you are doing.  That's how Kelsey learned to clap.  She claps at everything-when she recognizes a show, or a song, or when she sees someone she knows.  It used to be one open hand against one fist, but now it's both hands open so it makes the clapping noise.

Tarri, like Heather said, it's all repetition.  Sometimes I do something, then take Asher's hands and do it for him.  Then I do it again and see if he copies.  The hand clapping came suddenly after me doing it A LOT.  I noticed he'd clank two toys together, but I guess he didn't get the same immediate sound gratification when he was trying to learn with his hands.  For the cup on the mouth game, I waited until Asher was naturally just making any old noise and then I did it over his mouth.  At first, he was confused and would immediatly stop making noise when the cup was over his mouth, but I just kept it up (with me imitating inbetween).  Now he understands the game and knows what to do when I do it.  He's also learned to take his hand and move it over his mouth to make the same noise (this after watching me do the "indian noise" with my hand and mouth).

If you all figure out a trick to putting stuff in a box, let me know.  I've been trying to do this with Asher for months, but haven't been very successful yet.  Loves to take things out though!

I also noticed him starting to do his version of "meow" and "ruff."  He has a favorite dog stuffed animal and our cats are always outside the window, so I talk about them all day long.  I just noticed him recently copying my voice influctuations.  It's pretty funny that he decided to make those sounds, but not Dada!      His other favorite toy is Bedtime Bear.  I tease that DH is going to be really sad if Asher tries to say "Bedtime Bear" before Dada!

We had the best day ever yesterday!  Actually it was very off routine but Daniel coped like a dream.  First of all he slept in til 7.15 which has to be first I think.  Great but then that throws the rest of the day off doesn't it?  We leave for church at about 9.45 and usually Daniel can get an hour in from 8.30 - 9.30 but because he woke up later yesterday he didn't want to go down for a nap.
Well we tried not to worry and just took the pram into church to let him sleep in that.  No such luck.  He just wanted to play all morning!!  Got home at about 12.05 and got him his lunch.  He's still smiling at this point (having been awake since 7.15am).  Put him down for a nap at 12.45.  He fell asleep immediately and had an hour 45mins.
Then we were off out again to some friends for dinner.  Arrived for about 4pm.  They have a 15 month old dd.  Daniel LOVES playing with her.  Fed him and then we ate whilst he just played on the floor.  We left at about 6.45pm to get him back for bed.  I gave him his bottle and by this point he was nice and sleepy.  Brought him upstairs and realised I'd have to change his nappy before bed.  To his annoyance I began changing him.  Just after I'd taken his nappy off he started to poo  :x  :x   Tried to catch it with wet wipes etc  (come on surely you've all had to do this too  )  I was so intent on him not getting poo everywhere that I failed to notice he was peeing EVERYWHERE (oh the joys of having a boy  )  When I finally did notice I realised it was over his head, over his face, over his clothes - everywhere.  So the sleepy baby had now dissappeared and I had to do a full outfit change
Eventually he was tucked up in bed asleep and dreaming of ... (probably milk, or food or pee I should think  )
Then my sister phoned me to see if I wanted to go round to hers to watch a dvd.  Was so nice to be able to do something spontaneously for a change.
So all in all yesterday was a great day.  Daniel woke up at 6am again today though.  I knew it wouldn't last.

What cute frogs we have on this thread.  So sweet.

Tarri - for a long time Daniel has loved bashing things together and just recently this changed to him clapping.  We did it lots for him and he just copied.  It's so sweet now though coz we just say 'clap hands' to him and he does the hugest, widest claps for you.  In fact at church yesterday when people started to clap during the singing he seemed to think it was all for his benefit.  So funny.
I'm the same about wanting to know how to teach them to put stuff back in a box.  He loves to empty his toy box but doesn't get tidying away yet!

Julieb - Daniel and Asher sound so similar it's scarey (apart from mobility!!!)  Daniel also does the hand over mouth noise and the woof and meow.  The meow is so sweet. It's just this high pitched kind of squeal.

Right I must go and do something useful now.  It's too easy to spend too long at this computer.  Will everyone please stop writing so many interesting posts (only joking, please don't stop!)

Have a great day everyone.

JulieB and Tammy - OMG - Love the froggy outfit pics!!!

JulieB- Too funny because all Leah will say is dada. She even looks at me and says dada?

Tarri- Same as my doc, he talks too much. Actually the annoying thing is that he spends too much time asking me how work is blah, blah, blah that by the time we get to talking about Leah she is VERY crabby becuase it's like 90 degrees in there, she's naked and can't crawl around!

Hazel -    Your nightime ordeal made me laugh!!!! What a good boy though for adapting to the change so well.

Happy Leah news! She is clapping now too.  :D She LOVES dogs, so on our daily walk whenever she sees one, she sits up and claps. It's especially funny now becuase she is in a snow suit so she is clapping thru the mittens!

Sad Leah news - She is sick AGAIN!  We just got over it and now the cough and runny nose is back. Yesterday she screamed everytime I tried to put her down for a nap. I even tried to rock her and that didn't work. I'm a little worried her ears are hurting, but she doesn't seem to be pulling on them. Ahhh, and LOTS of night wakings for cuddles. So tired!

We just had such fun going to the park on the bicycle to walk the dog like real Amsterdammers.  It's the first time I have taken Ciara out on it (in the kiddy seat) without dh so was a little scared but we did great!   :D

Have been looking at the jusspress videos - they are soooo cute.  I can't believe Asher can walk already!  I wonder if he will be a famous athlete one day.... we will all say we saw him first!   :D Luka is gorgeous as a girl isn't he?  (and a boy too of course!)  I'm going to check out some more after Ciara's bedtime....

Deb - how is it going w/o df?  We had a good first night but from the second night the wakings started.... I did reinstigate the df on day 3 or 4 but by then it didn't help  :( so I just stopped it again after about a week or so  :?  It was so frustrating b/c she had slept 12 hrs from 2.5 months with a df but looking back it was right before crawling and all the rest of it, so maybe it was just bad timing  not sure....

Talk later  :D
