How to help a spirted baby block out visual stim?
« on: October 13, 2005, 20:22:00 pm »
Night time sleep is getting better, but I know the problem is still daytime naps.  I have a spirited 4 month old who can easily fall asleep in my arms, because he buries his head in my arm to block out visual stimulation.  However, falling asleep on his own in his crib during the day is tricky.  I literally have to stand there with my hand over his eyes, otherwise he pops them wide open and just can't seem to get back into that sleep window.  And sometimes having me there makes him really cry to be picked up.  The visual thing seems worse now that he's older.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Hi - I don't know if this will help or if you have already done it, but I hung a blanket on the side of the crib so that my dd cannot see out of her crib into her room.  I make sure she cannot reach the blanket and pull it down.  So there is really nothing major for her to look at except her hands.  She finds this very entertaining....

also - have you tried blackout curtains - they made a huge difference with my dd2. especially with her afetrnoon nap - it used to be so sunny and the first day i put the curtain up her afetrnoon nap (back theni think it was the 4pm catnap) her room was nice and dark and made it easier.
