homemade oat cereal
« on: October 14, 2005, 01:10:20 am »
Hello, my dd is almost 8 months and eats quite a bit of baby cereal and I'd like to start making my own oats cereal.

Could I take some quick cook minute oats grind them up in the coffee grinder then add water and zap in the microwave :?:

She still drinks lots of formula bottles so I'm not worried about her not having enough iron or other vitamins that are added to premade baby cereal.

Ha! I got on this morning to post on the same topic.  I know we talked about this before, but I finally got around to grinding the quick-cook oats and mixing it up for her.  I ground the oats to a coarse floury consistency, but it was kind of gluey/pasty when I mixed it up.  I mixed it with some prunes (as I usually do with the baby oatmeal), and she ate a few bites, but not much.

I'm going to try cutting it half and half with baby oats, but any ideas on how to make it more palatable?

That's funny:)

Well so far I've only tried it once with Emily, and I mixed two tbsps baby oat cereal with 1tbsp homemade.  She didn't notice the difference and also didn't get any tummy aches.

It is kind of floury tasting though.  Not sure what to do about that.

Maybe we shouldn't be grinding it quite so fine.  Our ped said we should be introducing more texture anyway.  Maybe I'll make some up straight out of the cannister and see if she'll take it that way.

I found another use for the oatmeal powder.  Dd has been having a hard time grasping slimy finger foods like ripe banana, so I have been rolling them in the oatmeal powder so she can get a grip.  It makes a mess, but it makes it alot easier for her to eat.

I was thinking this would work with crushed up cheerios as well.

My DD is eight months old and loves this recipe

oatmeal cereal (not ground) cooked in apple and pear juice (no milk).  I add a bit of vanilla essence and cinnamon and once the cereal is cooked I add in some mashed apple and pear.  I make up a big batch and freeze it and she loves it.

I use one pear and one apple and cook them in water for a few minutes till they're soft.  That leaves me with the apple and pear juice to cook the oatmeal.  I remove the apple and pear slices and mash them.  Then I cook the oatmeal in the juice then readd the mashed fruit.

When you say oatmeal cereal, are you referring to adult oatmeal (whole oats) or baby oatmeal cereal?

Yes I mean adult oatmeal cereal.  At first I thought I would grind it up afterwards but she was already on mashed food and when I gave it to her she loved it so much she ate all of what I prepared so I never looked back.

I've been trying as much as possible to use "real" food because it just makes life easier (and cheaper).  I actually loved that recipe for myself so now I don't bother adding sugar to my cereal I just use Pears.  They are very sweet.  I never even thought about that before I had a baby!

I also cut out the baby cereal because Paige is prone to constipation and it seemed that the baby cereal was making it worse.
