is she giving it up!! UPDATED
« on: October 11, 2005, 02:54:51 am »
I was just wondering something.....
I have been bf my dd exclusivly for her first 5.5 mths, after that she was on bf and one bottle of ebm a day.
We introduced formula to her without a problem, mainly incase she was hungry, I was out and there was no ebm thawed out.
We got the next stage up on the bottle nipple the other day as she seemed to be working hard to get what was in the bottle, so she now loves her bottle even more and will only takes me for about a min. or two.
Now this isn't a real big deal to me as I was thinking of weaning her completely but my heart strings were making it kinda hard.
Could she be self weaning? She is teething and I think she has a little of dh's cold, so that doesn't help any.
I was just curious about this, TIA

Theoretically babies don't self-wean before they are at least one year old, mostly they go longer than 1.5 year, even up to 5 years of age if allowed  .
However, when they are teething they may refuse breast, they are uncomfortable with a nipple. Also, some babies will ask for breast non-stop while teething to comfort themselves, it just depends on your baby. But, in your case, it sounds more like your baby started prefering a bottle to your breast because of the faster flow. It happens often that a baby will chose a bottle because she doesn't need to work so hard to get her milk as she has to while nursing from the breast. You mentioned that you moved her to the next stage nipple and that explains it all. She has no problem sucking from the bottle whereas getting milk from your breast is more effort for her.

It is up to you, you can still switch her back to breast, if you get back to a slower nipple on her bottles and keep offering breast more often.
If you plan to wean anyway, just go ahead and continue what you are doing and she will eventually wean herself.

Of course, I would like to encourage you to keep nursing, you can try to keep some of her feeds, at least. Let us know how it goes.

My daughter had a nursing strike when she got a really blocked nose. I started giving her breastmilk in the bottle as she was not getting enough from my breast and she decided she liked the 'less work for more reward' idea. I ended up stopping cold turkey and put her onto formula. I thought nine months was a pretty good effort and I found it easier on the heart strings to stop at this stage as it was more her decision than mine IYKWIM! I do miss breastfeeding a bit so I will often lay down next to her when she has her bottle, which we both enjoy.

I suppose I could have made a bit more effort to keep going, like using saline drops and all that stuff, but I just thought the timimg was right for us both to stop. I was a bit dissapointed at the beginning but I am really happy with my decision now.

well I just wanted to let you know that it actually turned out to be a little bit of a strike, I think it must have been her teeth, as she is ravenous for it this week. Also when it came down to it, it was really wrenching at me to give it up, I would miss "our" time a little too much. And she is still also very content to go between me and a bottle of either ebm or fomula.
Thanks for the suggestions.

I really think it is great that you have a baby who will do both.  I am going to try and do that with my second so if Mommy wants a break she can get one.  I plan on letting BM be the majority but it seems like it would be nice to know that if you were overly tired or for whatever reason that they would drink form a bottle and then still take milk from you too.  Glad the bf is still working out for you.

just as a note to anyone who reads this.
The way that we got Riley to take the bottle was the way that Tracy says in BWSAYP. Dh fed her the majority of one weekend, and I would give her a bf b4 bedtime. After that we made sure that she got at least a bottle a day. She was slow at first onlytaking 1 or 2oz a day, she has now worked her way up to 6 oz.
The bottles we used are the PLAYEX ADVANCED NURSER SYSTEM. The nipples are nice and plyable and the liners that they use are wonderful for keeping the baby's air intake from a bottle.
HTH anyone who is thinking of introducing a bottle to their lo.
