What was your outcome when dropping dreamfeed bottle??
« on: October 14, 2005, 17:51:28 pm »
Ds 4 months  goes to bed at 7pm, has a dreamfeed at 10.30pm/11pm and then feeds at anytime between 6am and 7am. He does wake in the night but not to feed. Wakes for dummy and think he is teething, definately not hunger.

I have noticed that the more ds has at the dreamfeed the more he seems to wake in the night!! Has anyone else noticed this??

I am so tempted not to give the dreamfeed and just see what happens, although i would imagine he would probably wake at about 3 or 4am.

What do you think?

Have you been surprised by the outcome?

I noticed someone recently had dropped the dreamfeed and their baby slept just the same, lucky them!! :)

Should i go for it or do you think he will wake in the early hours

Hi Kelly, I just posted something along the same lines. My DD was cutting down her DF and then stopped taking any at all! I posted if it was OK to quit the DF cold turkey and had some good replies. Someone said "what have you got to lose?" as she was waking 6x a night anyways
Last night we dropped it entirely and she slept from 7 pm - 4 am. She was then up from 4 am - 5:30 am playing (quite normal for her these days) and then went back to sleep until 7:15!!
I say, give it a go!! Good Luck!
Let me know how it turns out for you OK?

Glad I saw this... we were going to try the same thing.  DS has never taken more than 4 oz at the DF and that was once or twice.  Usually it's around 2, and last night I had to really work hard to get him to take 1.5.  I am starting to think maybe we'd be better off without it, since he's still waking at around  2 and then again around 5 to eat.  If he's going to get up twice anyway, why am I getting myself up that third time for nothing, right?  I don't think it's worth setting my alarm and getting up that extra time if he's only taking an ounce or two.

We're going to try skipping it tonight and see what happens.  I am curious to know what happens for you, too!!

Hey all!! Great news...second night with no DF and Molly only woke once at about 4 a.m. (her norm) and was awake for about 1/2 hour. We didn't feed her again and she went back to sleep and slept until 6:45 am.
Kelly, how did it go for you last night??
Twoblacklabs...is your LO on "solids" yet? How old is he? Keep us posted how it goes for you too!

HI Michelle thats great news for you. Your Molly is so beautiful in that pic!......... i didnt risk it last night as i hadnt had any replies until this morning... i may do it tonight but im scared to do it as i havent had to feed in the the night for weeks so getting up to do a night feed would feel like i was going back to square one. I dont know what to do, i think i will just one night go for it and just see what happnens and if he wakes at 3 or 4am i know to keep doing the dream feed. :)

twoblacklabs.... if your little boy isonly having a couple of ounces, like you say ..whats the point, just go ahead and dont do it and see what happens, you see my ds has 6 or 7 ounces so its harder for me to just take that away from him... but im gonna give it a shot anyway and just see what happens.. good luck to you :)

I didn't read all the previous posts so I hope I'm not repeating anyone but......we dropped the df about a month ago cold turkey. She's always been a great sleeper so we thought "why not?" When she used to get the df around 10pm or so, she would sleep through and I'd have to wake her around 7-7:30am to eat. Now that she doesn't get the df she wakes on her own between 6:15-7:15am. I wish she still made it until 7am every morning but don't mind that she doesn't always.

FYI: dd just turned four months.

Hi Kayna, i think it was yourself who i was referring to in my post, i knew someone on this forum had stopped doing the dreamfeed with success.

How much was Avery taking at the dreamfeed?

Thanks Kelly x

Hey Kelly,
I dropped the dreamfeed cold turkey with both of my kiddos.  Worked beautifully  :D   And I agree, with Zoe too it seems like the DF was actually interrupting her sleep or "reminding" her to eat again later.....hmmm...

Good luck - let us know how it goes!  :D

Hi Kelly

Just to let you know we dropped the dream feed with Scarlett at around three months or so.. She were giving it to her at around 10.30/11.00pm each night and to be honest it was tiring for me to stay up till that time each night!!

Eventually it was turning into a bit of a nightmare, she started only taking 2oz.. and we felt it really wasnt worth the worry of her waking up for such a small amount.. We went cold turkey and it really didnt change much at all.. she woke an hour earlier for her night feed (3 instead of 4).  But we persevered with it and just followed her cues for feed.. one thing we did do was put her on hungry baby milk.. just a little bit thicker for her, she is such a tiny thing and volume wise she just couldnt fit anymore in her tummy!!  The result was after perseverance and the new milk, that at 15 weeks, she started sleeping through from 7 till 7!!

Stick with it.. and get some early nights yourself!!

Lizzie

I'm sorry... I need to add that info to my signature!  Jack is 3.5 months old, so no solids yet!  He just had a doc visit the other day and he's up to 16.5 pounds.  Big boy :).

Well, we've dropped the DF, and the first night was BEAUTIFUL!  He slept from 8:30 to 3:30 and ate, and then til 6:45.  Last night wasn't so great, but still not horrible. He woke at 12:20 to eat and then 3:10 and ate again.  Then he woke up screaming at 4:40, but I didn't feed him, just got him back to sleep and he was up for the day at 6:30.

I think the DF *was* interrupting his sleep.  Today I'm going to try feeding more (2.5 hours instead of 3 to get an extra feed in) and see how tonight goes.  He was starving last night when he had his bottle and sucked down 8.5 oz pretty quickly. I think he would have taken more, but we just put him to bed.

Glad to hear things are going well for everyone!  Hopefully it keeps up.

I too have been wondering when to do this, it seems bella wakes aotomatically now at around 10pm for her DF, so it may take some time, then she has been waking at 4am for some reason....maybe I will drop it cold turkey.

For anyone who doesnt do a night feed but their baby still wakes in the night, i would strongly recommend dropping the dream feed.  My lo was takin 6 or 7 ounces at 10.30pm and then waking from 1am onwards, not hungry just restless.  I dropped the dream feed and those wakings have now stopped, he sleeps from 7pm through until 6.30am/7am with only 2 or 3 wakings for his dummy.  I honestly beleive that the dream feed really interferes with their sleep, i think the milk lies on their tummys and causes gas etc.

So anyone whos baby is waking but not hungry, try dropping the dream feed, its worked for me.

So he now feeds at 7am, 11am, 3pm and then 7pm , taking 9 or 10 ounces at each feed. So in a way he has made up the loss of the dream feed with the extra ounces in his daytime bottles.
