Hayley... Arwyn is from Lord of the Rings. Spelling is changed to make it more feminine as the original spelling is Arwen. I liked the original too but we put it out there to our family and friends and the "y" won.

Ankie is the Cantonese translation of my name. Instead of translating it into its two syllables and keeping them separate, my mother "anglicized" it. Funny thing about my name is that it is actually Dutch in origin if you look it up in a book.

I speak mostly Cantonese to Arwyn... I was born in Canada myself so my Cantonese is not the greatest but I want her to be able to talk to my parents and my grandmother so I am trying my best to consistently speak in Chinese. While it is not perfect, my DH also uses the Cantonese for everyday stuff like milk, wash your face, eat, sleep.

We also sign (I am a trained Teacher of the Deaf) but that is less consistent. She actually signed "milk" the other day when sitting in her highchair. She was getting very fussy so I thought she wanted more Cheerios... I kept giving her Cheerios and about the 5th one, she was waving both hands around, making all sorts of noise and then I noticed that one hand was signing "milk". Here she was, wanting something to drink and mommy kept feeding her dry Cheerios!

Nicknames:  Let's see...

Sarah:  Bear, Little Bear, Sarah Bear, Chippy

Zoe:  Zoekins (had that when she was still in my belly), Zee Zee, Princess, ZMasterB (??  dh??  He has nicknames for everyone/everything and rarely make a huge amount of sense :)), I call her Zeezle sometimes but she then tells me "I'm not a zeezle, I'm princess, zee zee or digger" LOL

Nothing has really emerged for Kaia and Hannah yet... Sometimes we call Hannah - hannah banana bear - but honestly I don't like it (but I do it??)  Mostly I just call them "the monkeys" or "little lady friends"

We often use "miss" in front of names or "the" too... many of our friends are "miss donna" "miss erin"  etc..  and DH often refers to himself as 'the dad' and me 'the mom'

ANKIE, quick q, do you have trouble speaking purely cantonese to Arwyn? Love the name by the way! I speak both, switching from one to the other without really thinking about it but perhaps I should just stick to Cantonese....
As for nicknames, we call him "little bird" (in Cantonese) for the way he always has his mouth open when he was a newborn and seemed to want to eat all the time. Sometimes, he is doofus, ratty boy or just ratty...they are meant to be terms of endearment!!! :)
Well our night last night was interesting. Had to keep going in and rolling Sam onto his back again. Seems when he gets there, he wakes himself up and then cannot get back. Found him the other day, jammed up against the edge of the cot, on his belly, with his mouth wrapped around the bar of the cot and he could not move!!
NIKKI, does the Safe T sleep work or will he get more frustrated? Did you use it with Nathan? If so, till what age?
HAYLEY, loved the show. got lots of freebies and actually bought quite a bit as the show specials were pretty amazing.
NAOMI-congratulations on the job!!!When do you start back?
Well it is back to work tomorrow for me and part of me is really excited but I know that I will miss Sam so much!!! :(
Have a great chat tomorrow.

Hi Karen... yes, I have trouble speaking only Cantonese. It doesn't help that DH can't understand it and I feel bad so... sometimes I translate right after. Otherwise, most of the time it is Chinglish... for example, "Do you want more 'nigh nigh'"? for "Do you want some more milk?" I really should speak proper Cantonese  . Hopefully she will is exposed to it enough that she will pick it up. My parents speak only Cantonese to her so my fingers are crossed that she will.

Hope everybody is having a good day/night. I noticed our thread slows down significantly on the weekends! I guess everybody is out enjoying some family time.  :D

Hey, girls.  I'm loving the nicknames, too.  Dh reminded me that I had forgotten to add Stinky Angry.  That came one morning when Ryan was about 6 weeks old.  Dh was leaving for work and Ryan was really mad about something and he had just laid the stinkiest, nastiest turd of his life (up to that point...and then came solids!)  So, he said, "Goodbye, Stinky Angry.  Goodbye, Kate."  And, it stuck.  That might be more mean than Doodie, but at least he'll have options!

Am getting ready for a Halloween party tonight...I'm going as Lorelai Gilmore from the Gilmore Girls.  I'm a big fan as are several of the girls who'll be there.  Dh is being a skater, as he has the costume from a few years ago.  Just went to Wal-Mart ( ) to get a cheapie skateboard and is having the kid across the street break it in for him.  It's pretty cute, actually!

Happy birthday Erin!
Good luck tomorrow Karen!
Wishing you all lots of sleep vibes!
Kate,

Ankie, thanks for sharing your name and language information with me. Very interesting. Especially the bit about signing, I've wondered about how effective it is teaching them, obviously it works.

Daniel's having a meltdown thismorning. So am I. I've just tried to put him down earlier than his 2.5hours cos he was yawning and really grizzly, but he screamed so much I've just got him up and put Baby Mozart on. So he's lying watching that. DH is away, back thisafternoon, so I've been looking after him by myself for about 3 days. I don't know how you do it Judy when your DH goes away. Man, there's not enough hats on my head I can take off for you!

The reason for my meltdown is the last night Daniel woke 3 times! I think it was 12.30am, 3.30 and 5.30am. Now the first two wakings I fed him because he wouldn't go quiet unless I did, but at 5.30am he didn't want anything. Gee what a surprise he'd already consumed more than he would during the day feed by then I'm sure. So what else could it be I wondered. I was lying in bed after putting him back in his cot and he started drifting off when he started grizzlying again. Mmmm maybe it's the nappy. So up I get again and change it. Very full, not pooey though. I go back to bed, Daniel goes back to sleep and I lay there wondering. Maybe it's a wet nappy that's waking him all this time???? I don't know how much he weighs now, but at 5 months he was 7.92kg. The nappy takes them up to 11kg. But he's a big wee-er (such a word?) and drinking lots at night at the moment, so maybe just maybe this is the problem. I'm going out to buy the next size up in nappy today. I guess if it doesn't solve the problem at least I'll have the next size in nappy. I'll just use them for nights. I go onto another baby site and I think one of the mums said this is usually her sign when the bub needs to increase in nappy size, waking at night.

It's just so frustrating because he'd started sleeping 11 hours. So why now suddenly is he waking twice or three times? I've decided it's not teeth now as there's no problems during the day at the moment, so can't put it down to that. He could still be hungry, but to wake 3 hours after a huge feed is not normal. And it's not growth spurt as he's not over indulging during the day. Sure I think he should be drinking more during the day, but I can't change that.

Sorry this is sooo long. Just had to tell someone. I've already had tears of exhaustion thismorning for no reason apart from having to get out of bed because Daniel was getting bored with his toys on my bed while I tried to catch another few minutes lying down. They weren't tears at Daniel, just tears cos I wish my hubby or someone could have looked after Daniel while I got some more sleep.

Enough from me. Hope your days and nights go better than mine are.

Oh, one good bit of news for me, is I've found out where I might be able to get a Nuby cup. I've searched everywhere and then on the other forum one lady mentioned she saw one at Pak'n'Save which is the cheapest grocery chain here. I never would have thought they'd have it, but I'm going to look today when I get the bigger nappies. :D (And buy some painkillers for this headache!)

Oh yay, just had to tell you after a few more tears (quite loud ones) I went back in to Daniel after putting him down and took with me a BOTTLE. I decided if he was crying because he was hungry (he didn't take a big feed at 7am when he woke up due to last nights marathon feeds) he might take the bottle. Well, more tears and protests for a minute or two and he kind of took it. I think he managed about 20 mils! This is big progress for us. Then he kind of drifted into a daze with it just in his mouth and me holding him tight. I took it out and popped him into his cot. Just barely awake and he went out like a light.

I know he was overtired/grizzly because of being awake so much last night, and probably was hungry due to lack of milk thismorning, so if we can fix those night wakings I know we'll be fine. I'll try the bottle again when he wakes for his next feed as I'm sure he'll be hungry by then.

Hayley, I found with Nathan that he was only affected by teething at night for some reason - less to focus on perhaps? Hopefully your bigger nappies work out - is he actually leaking through them?  I would think your wakings are developmental in some way - really frustrating and it's not really possible to put your finger on it.  But it will get better.

Karen, I'm not sure what to do about the safeTsleep - I weaned Nathan out of it at 7mths because he was soooo active and was rolling onto his tummy to sleep so I thought I may as well get rid of it.  Danielle is quite content to lie in it still although she is getting more wriggly.  Honestly, I don't think I'd introduce one now - they do take weaning and I know that I'll probably have disturbed sleep when I do get rid of it with her moving around the cot (although her arms have always been out at least).

Day 1 of Nathan's gluten-free diet and he slept through the night!!!!!  :D  A shame I lay awake after D's 3am feed for 2hrs since my brain is so crammed with celiac info at the moment.

Nikki - well done for Nathan. You must be so happy! He'll be a different boy today. Thismorning Daniel's nappy was wet thru to the outside, but as I mentioned, not surprising due to how much he ate last night. If it is teething, then how do I fix it when he's crying so much I can't get any medication in? I guess I could feed him a bit to calm him then try to get some in. I might try that tonight if he wakes.

I understand about the developmental thing, and as he sleeps in a sleeping bag have wondered whether that's prohibiting him from moving how he wants to. What do you others do? Do you have sleeping bags at this age or not?

Hayley, I skipped the sleeping bag stage and went straight onto those polar fleece sleep suits for Nathan when we got to this age (and weaned out of the STS), over summer he was mainly just in a thin regular sleepsuit.  So basically he was just layered up and down as required yet his legs and arms were completely free to move.  Also, when standing in the cot he could walk around if he wanted to.  I still buy them for Nathan now, but probably won't next winter.

Thanks for advice NIKKI. Will have to ride this one out. Thanks for prompt reply as was about to go to the Show again and get one on show special.
HAYLEY, Sam is in a grobag and it does not seem to stop him moving AT ALL!!! He rolls, creeps up the bed etc etc. Oh and we have a heater on timer at night to go on about 2 am so he does not get too hot early evening and too cold early morning.
Must go dust my work gear off.

Hi everyone,  James has a few nicknames, mainly monkey though.  Sometimes he gets called Jamiejames (and he answers to this):)

everything here is going well.  I had tried J on bananas a couple of times and he always screwed his face up, so I gave him a pieces to feed himself (he now has 3 teeth) and he ate the whole thing.   'very independant this little man. LOL  Anyway, he is pulling himself up everywhere and is alittle energizer bunny while awake but has turned into a sleeping machine. Sleeps 11.5-12hrs every night.  naps are going well, with him going down relatively easy and having 2 x 1.5hrs and maybe a catnap on average.

Happy Halloween  everyone up North.  Hope it is a lot of fun.

Hi Everyone!

My nicknames for Fraser are Bubba and Pumpkin.  DH calls him bugalugs (what is it with the bug theme??)  He also gets monkey and cheeky monkey (called him cheeky monkey while pg).  He also gets Crankypants Jack when he's in a mood (quite often actually!).  And Frase.  I guess I could go on LOL!  We also have all the Mr toys (Mr Bug, Mr Donkey etc etc)

So I need to rant.  Sorry in advance.

Why is it that, after starting BW with Fraser at about 8 weeks, and having had some serious success for getting off to independent sleep at times (like for a whole month somewhere in there) we now have so much difficulty at EVERY SINGLE SLEEP...

We never used to have any trouble whatsoever for the night sleep - it now takes about an hour of screaming, PU/PD, wrapping, more milk, more screaming, rolling like a madman around the cot, headbutting the slats, leg slamming etc etc etc all the while screaming.  Tonight I gave Panadol after an hour and he finally slept.  Do you think it could be a medical thing?

And then naps - every nap time is a battle - a big battle.  Didn't manage to get him down for his second nap today at all so he then passed out during his 3pm feed.  Woke up from that very "crankypants Jack" all through dinner, bath, feed, and on to screaming (see above!)

After last nights hour session DH has the gall to say to me "how come we have all this trouble when he's supposed to be Baby Whispered?"  I said something along the lines of "just imagine how hard things would be if he wasn't".  He then said "what, so all the other baby's who sleep are baby whispered are they?"    C'mon, I had just dealt with a screaming kid for an hour, give me a break.  I said "well, if you think I'm doing this all wrong just let me know.  If you've got better ideas why don't you take over".  Ok, so not the best Saturday night conversation.  I'd have to say things have been pretty frosty since.  I am so disappointed because I thought the only person who really understood BW and was really on board with it with me was him...

But seriously, what is going wrong?  I know we've had issues with illness etc but we try (or at least I think we try, don't really know what DH does when I am at work) to be consistent the rest of the time with winddown, going into bed while awake, etc etc.

I am seriously at the end of my rope here - this is not helping me try to manage my moods and I am flying off the handle with DS when I am having difficulty settling him.  I just don't know what to do...

Sorry so long - but would really appreciate any ideas.

TIA!
Jo

Jo,

{{HUGS}}!!!  To me it sounds developmental, with all the mobility.  It seems to be a common theme on the thread with all the LO's the same age as Fraser.  Also, does Fraser sleep flat, I mean right on the crib mattress?  I have an inclined crib wedge for Sophie, she doesn't sleep well without it.  I'm sorry I don't have more for you *sigh*, this too shall pass, I suppose.

Does your DH watch Fraser while you are at work?

It has been frosty in our house as well this weekend.  Is anyone else tired of the 'men will be men' excuses, or 'all men are the same'?  I call bull !  Sorry but I am at work and it is 6AM sunday morning and DH has the nerve to say to me as I am rolling out of bed to get ready at 4AM 'I'm supposed to be golfing this morning - is the nanny coming?"    I tell you where I would like to stuff those golf clubs.  I have not gone out, not for dinner drink NOTHING, much less gone golfing (yes, I love to golf) in 16 months.  I have not gone for a spa day or even had a lunch date with girlfriends in yes, you guessed it 16 months.  My life is Sophie, work, house cleaning, laundry, errands, grocery shopping, start again!!!  Wow did I need to vent or what.  This is all coming after a few days of DH/work frustration....oh I could go on but won't, because I should get back to work....

Thanks for the vent ladies.........
