blankets for babies
« on: October 17, 2005, 19:21:33 pm »
It is starting to get cold here at night and I am not sure what to do with my ds.  He is 13 mos. and sleeps with a shirt (his lovey) which I try to cover him with.

I have put a layer of fleece under him in the cot, but was wondering about when it is ok to give him a real blanket to sleep under.  He is dressed in a long sleeve pants onesie without feet (he doesn't like them, and his feet are too big anyway!).   He moves around A LOT when he sleeps.  He also wakes frequently and is up at 5 am!  (We are working on that.)

Should I dress him warmer or give him a blanket?

Have you tried  sleeping bags  for babies? If not than yes, I would give her a blanket; one made of natural fibre (loosley knitted wool would be a good choice for example).

I have been using a sleeping bag for my daughter (she is almost 4 now) and i find it works best because she can't knock it off and it keeps her toasty warm all night.  When I started toilet training her we stopped using the sleeping bag but she uncovered herself and got so cold at night that she asked to be put back in the sleeping bag again.  Now she knows to unzip it at night, go to the bathroom and slip back into it afterwards.  For the really cold nights we have a woolen one, for the warmer nights we use thinner cotton sleeping bags.

I'd go for the blanket.Although we have a baby duvet which is fine for over 12months old. They're light but warm.

I would dress him warmer.  I tried introducing a blanket to my daughter but she thought it was a toy (at 16 months)..... so we took it out and just dress her warmer.  We will re-introduce a blanket when she goes into a big girl bed.

I tend to not follow all the rules.  Dorian has used a blanket since the moment he was born.  And every once in a while even a pillow.

I've had alot of people tell me how bad it is but i'm a very light sleeper so i'm not to worried about it.  But now that dorian is bigger he likes having the blanket in bed with him even if he's not covered by it.

Thank you to everyone.  I couldn't find a baby sleep sack or bag in his size.  It seems as though everyone is sold out right now.  You can get newborn though.  I will keep looking.

He just got over a cold and we introduced both a pillow and a blanket.  I know, I know bad mommie, but now he only wants to sleep on the pillow.     I was worried about the blanket because he moves around so much but so far he seems to kick it off and then roll.  He wakes up cold and calls me in to cover him back up.

http://www.bumpto3.com does sleeping bags up to age 6 so I'm sure they would have something to fit your lo (they deliver overseas too).

Duvets, quilts, pillows, etc are generally considered ok from 12 months so you are not a bad mommie at all. My dd had a pillow from 12 months and moved out of her sleeping bag and under a baby quilt at 18 months (when she got too big for the 6-18month grobag)

She now uses a regular single sized duvet and pillow in her big girls single bed.
