spitting while spoon feeding
« on: October 17, 2005, 22:40:30 pm »
My 9 month old has started spitting (raspberry style) when he eats from a spoon.  He's not full and he does it with lots of foods, so I don't think it's a matter of taste. I've tried telling him "no" in a serious tone (which admittedly is hard because it's kind of cute!) and praising him when he does it right, but I don't think he's old enough to get it.  Does anyone have any advice?

All I can say is it's probably a phase.  DD did the same thing, and still does on occasion, but it comes and goes.  She does go days doing the same thing (like raspberries without the food) over and over and over again, but then it passes on to the next thing.

I'm not sure if the "no" thing is being understood (you'd know best), but maybe it could be encouraging the behaviour cause it's getting attention????  I don't know, but it's a possibility.  We always ignored dd when she does things like that while eating and laugh about it when she's not.

I have no advice, because my 8 month old does it too!  But I'm interested to see what people say...

My dh sticks the spoon in his mouth somehow that he's able to swallow and not spit.  But I can't figure it out, cause even when I do that, I usually wind up covered even more!     :D

I'd say a phase.  DS did it for a while at this age too.  A couple of times, I laughed so of course since he got a response... he did it again.  Like many things, if there's no response (even saying no) then there's no incentive to do it again.  I'd ignore it.

Thanks for the replies.  Today we tried praising him for eating without spitting and ignoring the spitting.  We just stopped feeding him and stepped away for a few minutes.  I'm pretty sure it's just a phase, as he does seem to get stuck on one thing for several days (tongue clicking, lip popping, etc) so we'll just hope it goes away.  BTW, does anyone know at what age they do start to understand "no" or at least the tone of voice?

My dd started getting the no or like you say, the tone, around 8 months.  Although it's still hit and miss.
