Expressing for DF. Low milk supply?
« on: October 19, 2005, 01:22:11 am »
Just a quick question, can any one offer advice or thoughts?  I have decided to start doing a dreamfeed, and expressed yesterday.  The most milk I got was about 20ml, from both breasts.  I expressed 3 times, the first being after the first feed of the day.  I'm worried now that my supply is low.  My lo has over the last couple of weeks been feeding for only about 10 mins per side (sometimes less!) and I've been worrying that he's not getting enough milk.  (I'm taking him to be weighed today so I will now whether he's gaining)

I had decided that he was just becoming more efficient at feeding, but now with the small amount I've managed to express, I'm worried that there just isn't enough milk there?

Has anyone experienced similar?  I know that I will never be able to express as much as my lo is able to get himself.

Try expressing an hour after his first feed. You should get a let down and more milk.

It is actually good that you aren't getting much directly after his feeds. He is draining your breasts well!  :D

Get his weight checked but I can bet he is gaining well. Usually babies get really efficient at the breast and  can be done in less than 10 minutes.

The best time to express is morning, that's when your supply is at its highest.

I'd never thought of is this way - but it makes perfect sense!  I'm off to get him weighed today and that should put my mind at rest.

Sometimes though - like this morning (first feed) he just wasn't interested in feeding, he bobs on and off and is more interested in looking around, smiling at me and talking to me!  While this is totally adorable and melts my heart, I worry that he's not getting enough to eat.  Eventually I managed to get him to have his fill, but it took about an hour, on and off to get it into him!

He may be ready to go a little longer between feedings. You could try playing for 15-20 min to get him a little hungrier before feeding. You are coming upon a tough time, 3-4 months is so distracted and it is hard to get them to eat. Also, their metabolism will slow down and they don't need quite as much quite as often. And they often make up for what they don't get during the day by waking up all night to eat.
