Is it normal to be constipated
« on: October 20, 2005, 11:03:56 am »
Hi there,

I have recently started giving my lo a teaspoon of baby rice to start introducing him to solids, but have noticed that he has become a bit constipated - is this normal as I am a bit concerned.

Thanks for your help.

Rice IS very constipating...more so in younger babies too.  How old is your lo?

Rice can be constipating...I never could feed it to Tyler, it bound him right up no matter what I did! Depending on your LO's age, you can try other foods that don't tend to constipate, like pears. Also, constipation can be a sign in younger babies that their digestive systems aren't mature enough to process solid foods yet. HTH!

it is the extra iron in most commercial rice cereals that is constipating.  since we already had issues with constipation with olivia i limit rice cereal to breakfast and as a filler if her fruit or veggies are too runny.  at breakfast i always make it as 1TBS pears + 1 TBS pureed prunes + 2 TBS cereal so the pears and prunes counteract the cereal...

pears are another recomended first food so don't feel you have to stick with just rice cereal.  you can go on to pears and mix together if you want  HTH
