Great recipie for baby's first taste of curry !
« on: October 23, 2005, 15:49:55 pm »
Being asian, I was thinking about how to start introducing curries to my almost 8 mth old.

Here's what I tried, and served it with over-cooked rice.

He loves this recipie as its quite sweet.

Sweet Potato Curry(& red lentils if you want to add it in)

2 cups of small diced sweet potatoes
half cup of red lentils (optional)
one small onion finely chopped
1 tbsp veg oil (any kind)
0.5cm x 0.5cm size cinamon stick (no bigger otherwise it will be overpowering !)
2 small cardamon pods (keep whole)
half tsp of cumin power
half tsp of corriander powder
tiny pinch of tumeric powder (yellow coloured powder)
(if you can't get these then substitute with half tsp curry powder)
2 - 3 cups of water (or whatever is required until lentils and potatos are cooked).

Heat Oil, add the cinamon stick and onions, fry until onions are about to turn brown, add the potatoes, spices and cardamon, stirring well, add the water and then the lentils, cook for about 20 mins or until the lentils are soft, keep adding water if necessary, after it done, there should still be some water left - so its not so dry.  Mash it all up using a potato masher and serve with over cooked rice.

(Just boil normal rice for longer than you would normally have yours, so its really soft and mushy.)

Serve with the rice mixed up.

My baby has this at least twice a week and loves it.  Try it on your baby !

Great recipe! Will try it tomorrow... except, I already have a batch of cooked sweet potato in the freezer... can I just cook everything else and then add the sweet potato?

Yes, if you cook potato's then its even quicker.  Because this dish is sweet - they should like it.

Hi Dina

I've been thinking of trying my 21 month old with some thing spicy so I might give this a try without mashing it up.

Could you do this with meat/chicken too? How would you go about that? Just brown the meat with the onions and cook for a little longer?

love
Marie

This is from the "Organic Baby and Toddler Cookbook"  we made it when alex was about 9 mo old and plan to try it on Liv soon.  when alex was not keen, Dh ate whatever she left over  (actually he did that quite often with some of the adventurous things we tried on her)

VEGETABLE AND COCONUT KORMA (FOR AGES 7-10 months+)
1 tsp olive oil
1/2 small onion, chopped
1 small carrot, peeled and diced
pinch each - ground ginger, cumin, coriander and turmeric
2 tsp tomato puree
1 small potato peeled and finely diced
1 tsp beans (haricot, butter, etc) - tinned or boiled, unsalted
2 tsp dessicated coconut
90ml (3 fl oz) water

Heat the oil in small pan over medium heat. lightly fry onion and carrot until soft (app. 5 min)
Add the spices and tomato puree & heat for app. 3 minutes, stirring continuously.  Put 1/2 the mixture in a small bowl and set aside
Add potato, beans, coconut and water to the pan. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat and cover and simmer approx. 15 min
Puree roughly or mash.  Mix in reserved veg, adding extra water if thinner consistency is preferred / required

serves: 2 for a 7 mo old or 1 serve for a 10 month old
storage: 24 hours in fridge or 4 weeks in freezer
good source of iron and magnesium
prep time: 10 min, cooking 25 min
