How to progress from baby rice??
« on: October 23, 2005, 17:02:01 pm »
Hello there,

my DS is now 5 and half months and this will be his forth week on baby rice.

I have tried every second day on carrots, potato, butternut squash and he wont eat anything but baby rice!!  I have no resorted to trying with food from jars but still he doesnt want any of it.  When I give him the food he starts to gag.

What do I do as I would like to progress from baby rice oh and he also likes pe floius yogurts.

Please help

Thanks

How about mixing a little of the veg or fruit (pear is a good one - mild flavour) in with the rice cereal. Then gradually increasing the fruit/veg and decreasing the rice cereal.
Also, you could try mixing in a little of whatever milk baby is drinking with the food.

Also, have you tried other cereals?? Perhaps barley, then oatmeal?
Once he gets used to different tastes he may give the fruits/veggies a try.
Are you making the rice cereal the same consistency as the baby food?? Maybe the cereal is quite runny and the foods are more solid and he isn't ready for the thicker food?? If so, try thickening up the cereal (less water or formula) and he will eventually get used to it. Will probably gag for awhile until he gets used to the feeling in his mouth.
My DD often will just keep the food in her mouth without swallowing!
Just be persistent and he'll get the hang of it!!

Good luck Caza! It takes ages to get them used to new foods and textures, but eventually it happens.

It is lovely to talk to people from all over the world isn't it? :D
