12 week old feedings
« on: October 24, 2005, 02:38:33 am »
I'm wondering about my 12 week old.  I see a lot of posts from mothers saying their babies are taking 6-7oz of formula.  My little one is only taking 3-4oz still, every 3-4 hours.  I was worried she wasn't getting enough so I've been playing with her schedule.  I tried taking her down to 3oz every 3 hrs but she started spitting up and didn't have much interest in eating.  I figured she wasn't hungry yet and I was overfeeding her.  I took her back to 4 hours and she has been doing fine.  Yesterday I gave her 4 feedings, 3 oz each.  She was having a bit of trouble falling asleep so I figured she was hungry and tried to feed her at 10pm (she had eaten last at 7:15).  She just used it to pacify and took none of it.  I just gave her the binky back and put her to bed expecting her to wake up starving but she slept until 8am.  7:15pm to 8:00am, that's a long time for a little one isn't it, she usually only goes 9 hours without eating.  My concern is that she only had 12oz total yesterday!  Yet she's just fine.  Maybe she's getting sick?  I can't figure out what to do with her.  I guess just take her up to 4 oz every 4 hours?  She won't do much more than that.  I'm guessing she's about 9 lbs now, is 16 oz enough for her?  I don't do a dreamfeed.  I found that it really disrupted her sleep b/c she never wanted to take the bottle and then had horrible gas after she did.  She doesn't seem to be hungry so is it okay?  She also has been playing with her bottles lately, turning her head and such.  She seems to be thriving just fine and is getting a bit of fat on her so maybe there is no problem?  Any one been in a similar situation?

Hi Kate

The general calculation of amount of feeds is 2.5/2.7oz of milk per lb of body weight. So at 9lbs that would be 22.5-24.5oz in a 24 hour period.

That said, this is a guideline, all babies are different and some will eat more and some less.

Is she still gaining weigh okay? As long as her weigh is okay and she isn't crying out of hunger then I wouldn't worry too much.

love
Marie
