3 Day rule or 1 week rule?
« on: October 24, 2005, 04:54:43 am »
Just wondering out there who tested new foods for only the three day limit or if most of you tested for the one week limit?  Due to myself having allergies, I've heard that one week is better to make sure my ds doesn't have any reactions, but also was told that if he was going to, it would happen within the three day limit....a bit confused?!

I offered new foods every 3 days. Except for allergenic foods. When I gave Max milk, I didn't offer ANY other new foods and ONLY yogurt for a week. Same when I did cheese and then cows milk itself.

If you have obvious allergy reactions, immediately stop giving the food.

Sometimes it can take a few days for you to notice a reaction, depending on the severity and type of reaction.  When I first started giving solids I did 3 days at a minimum.  At this point, knowing he has food allergies and knowing that his reactions are not always immediate, I am going at least a week.  In your case I would advise a 3-day minimum for most foods, but up to week for the more allergenic foods (dairy, eggs, soy, wheat, corn).  Considering the family history of food allergies, I would also wait to introduce these foods until your child is at least a year.  I would wait 2-3 years for peanut butter and tree nuts.

HTH and good luck!
Jenn - still breastfeeding
ds 12/04 - milk, eggs, beef, wheat, peas, avocado, zucchini, sweet potato, winter squash, spinach, tree nuts, sesame seeds. Also avoiding peanuts, sunflower seeds.

My ped told us to do 7 days. I'm so glad she did because LO has had bad reactions to 3 foods so far, and it took me a good 3-4 days to figure it out. With oatmeal, I didn't realize it was a problem until after 10 days! fortuantely, when I introduced oatmeal, cereal was the only food he was eating so it was easy to narrow it down as the culprit.

It can be frustrating to do 7 days because it takes so long to get food introduced! I've been doing this for a month now, and so far we only have 2 foods he can eat - the other 2 gave him really bad gas. But, I'm willing to be patient! Perhaps in another month or two, as his gut gets used to solids more, I may reduce the wait to 4-5 days.

And as he gets older, the gassy stuff might be ok.  Major gas when DD first had sweet potatoes, a few months later she had no problem with them.

I'm sorry to resurrect such an old thread...but I'm kinda new to the forum.

For the sweet potato...did you keep feeding your lo for 2 months until she got used to it?  Or did you wait for 2 months before you tried it again?
